oh yeah, this was a big hit when i was prolly with my very 1st transistor radio, some little panasonic thing that was shaped in circle and opened up to look like an s. very 60s, maybe more like an early 70s thing.
anyway, now that i think of it, sylvester has a dance version of this, and i want to get his greatest hits on CD, because he's had some good stuff. and why not add to my archive?!

Freda Payne was never a Supreme. Her younger sister Scherrie Payne was in the group from 1977 to 1979, after this song's release in 1970.

I like it. I'd never heart it until it got played on AT10.

I like Belinda Carlisle's remake. Like a fool I charted her version in 1986. I'm glad it was a "non-radio" hit but club hit instead, I thought that it sucked.

I used to spin this once in a while at the disco, and I remember one of the regulars who told me that he'd heard Freda Payne herself explain that the song was about a woman who discovers - on her wedding night - that she's been virtually "jilted". The husband she's so in love with turns out to be a closeted gay man who can't perform with her.
I dunno if it's true, but the lyrics do seem to fit that explanation.

I think Michelle Branch remade it too.
