This song was an album cut from Whitney's first album. Apparently, a few A/C radio stations began playing this around the mid-point of the summer of 1986 and it actually made a brief appearance on the R&R AC chart (peaked around #26 or so).
"All At Once" and "Didn't We Almost Have It All" sound very much alike. In fact, one time, sometime in May, 1988 when I was at a restaurant and this song, which I didn't know about yet, was playing and I assumed it was "Didn't We Almost Have It All". But when the noise level at the restaurant died down a little, I realized it was a different song. I sort of figured that maybe it was her follow-up to "Where Do Broken Hearts Go". I didn't really think much about it until I heard it on a lite rock station at the end of 1989. I later found out that it was from Whitney's first album.
This song is so/so, but it's rather depressing. Has that sort of rainy-day sound to it.

Good song. I can definitely rattle off several other Whitney songs I like more, but this isn't far behind.

Love it.
I think this charted on the R&B charts in 1986.

Nice song, though I have to be in the mood to actually want to hear it.

Love it. I think this charted on the R&B charts in 1986. No it did not, actually. Back in 1986 I thought for sure that this was going to be her 5th single lifted from her debut album. I was listening to the American Chart Show while in England and Gary Bryd played this via satellite as an LP cut. When I heard "Didn't We Almost Have It All" I knew right right away that it sounded like this song. I guess if the record company decided to release this as a commercial single, it could have broken her string of three number one hits, right there. I actually like this song much more than "Didn't We..". Good Topic. Thanks for sharing. Now on with the posts...

I'm really not a fan of her 80s adult contemporary pop ballads.

This is one of her most-known songs here in Italy. Her performance of it at the Sanremo Festival in 1987 was so amazing that the audience asked her for an encore during the standing ovation she received which was unheard of in the history of the festival (especially for a foreign guest).

It's schmaltzy, overly slick in sound, all of that- but I love it. I get chills hearing her sing this one.
Did it actually appear on R&R's AC chart? I always wondered if it did, but I only had a seen tracks that peaked in the top 15 for that year.
I can't find it now, but I recall seeing what would have served as the video for the track- was a performance video (I think she had short hair).
Very true about the similarities to "Didn't We Almost Have It All." Michael Masser had a very distinct (and overused) sound at that time.

Initially wasn't that fond of this but I've grown to love it over the years. Such a sweet melody sold by a spectacular vocal of course.
