A moderate hit in America, but it flopped pretty much everywhere else.
I absolutely loved this song to death. I think it's truly beautiful. I was really angry that it tanked here. She should have promoted it.

08/29/02: "Ordinary Day" [#5] [13 wks]
Not as good as her first single, but I loved it. I especially liked the little string bit. Chantal Kreviazuk basically ripped this song off for her single "Time," but I actually prefer that one over this.

It was a moderately good song, nothing special though. Her babyish voice gets annoying after a while too. Now, if only she'd followed up that second single with "Rinse" then she could have had three hit singles in a row, instead of two, but that's whole 'nother topic.

I thought "Pretty Baby" was a very bad single choice as well. I liked it a lot and it made it to #25 on my chart but it didn't sound like much of a hit.

Well I think 'Pretty Baby' is the most commercial song on the record after 1000 miles. The only other I could imagine radio playing is 'Unsung'.
My fave track on the album was 'Wanted' though. I like her darker songs. I really hope she surprises us all and develops into a real Tori Amos-esque singer.

I like Vanessa Carlton. She showed some promise on her debut. Hopefully, her next LP she can grow as an artist.
Her debut album produced four hits on my chart.
2002 09 A Thousand Miles 2002 27 Ordinary Day 2003 01 Pretty Baby 2003 21 Unsung

This was a hit during a very weak period of time (IMO), when there was no really good music out. As a result, this song actually topped my personal Top 30 chart. Any other time, it probably would have peaked at around number seven or so.

I liked this and the radio remix of "Pretty Baby" better than "A Thousand Miles". There were all decent though.

I was one of only about 70 people here to buy the single here. Loved it more than 1000 Miles, and I thought the b-side Swindler was even better.

Semi-boring and overrated. Agreed here. Like the title, it was "ordinary" and not special whatsoever. It rode ATM's popularity to the top 10, otherwise this song would have flopped big time.

Words cannot describe how much I love this enchanting song. The musical arrangement, the melody, everything makes the song great! I think it's her best and, in fact, my second favorite song of all time.
As for "Pretty Baby," it seemed to me as the obvious choice for the third single. It is extremely catchy and radio-friendly. Too bad radio just never realized that.
I wonder why she didn't go for adds on Hot AC and AC after "A Thousand Miles."

I loved this song. It's a really excellent summer song. I love the way her voice flows with the piano and other instrumentals of the song. As good as "A Thousand Miles" is, this blew it out of the water. Probably to the point where 1000mi could be considered overrated (though I don't really).
In the end, I think it's better to say this was underrated. Yeah, it reached the top 10 on CHR/Pop, but it was hiding in it's predecessor's shadow the whole time. Plus, it was never released anywhere else, despite charting on Hot AC. In some ways, that was the case on my personal chart, where it stopped at #7 and only spent 18 weeks on (ATM was #1 for 2 weeks with 27 on). It was #32 for the year, though.
Anyway, I was saying how I liked the flow of this song. It's just so dynamic, which was probably the real reason why I'm so into it. I just don't see how anyone could consider it boring. I mean, the combination of the melody and her voice just seems to grab you as it goes along - at least it did for me. Of course, I don't think I fully realized this after it went away, which is generally the case for many songs I like.

Best song ever. Looked back at the calendar, and if I had been keeping a personal chart back then it would have been a 20 week #1. I remember hearing like a 4 second clip of it on TRL the day the album came out, then spending the next 7 hours on Winmx trying to get a full, legit mp3. Then I burned it to a CD and put it on repeat for the whole half hour ride to school. (yes, I did go and buy the album that day too )

This was so boring and overplayed. I'm glad I don't have to hear it anymore.

Plus, the lyrics of this song are far greater than the lyrics in "A Thousand Miles." This is true, but not enough for me to like this song. It'd probably be about a C. Although, considering the number of people who fell for "1000 Miles" (which I felt was absolutely horrendous), I'm shocked at the number of people that don't like this.

I absolutely loved this song to death. So do I - in fact, I still do. My #1 song of 2002. This set the initial record for most weeks at #1 (8), and was my Top 20 chart's biggest song until "Someday" came along. I remember going into absolute overdrive payolaing this on PB. (The result was 2 or 3 weeks at #1 and #2 for 2002. )

It's her best single ever, in my opinion. I still like this song and love to listen to it, even after a couple years.
