This was a fun song that had a very short chart run. Peaked at #33 in R&R and got up to #28 on Billboard.
I'm actually posting this because I was just listening to a tape that I found in the street quite awhile back. It was in 1987 and I listened to part of it (it contained several songs from late 1986/early 1987) and then threw it into the box where I kept all of my tapes back then. But I was listening to it last night, I heard a hilarious parody of "Jimmy Lee". It was actually just the bridge, where Aretha keeps singing "Jimmy Lee". It sounded like a ten-year old was singing it and it went something like:
Jimmy Lee He took a pee On my pet bee Damn that - Jimmy Lee And then the bee Stung Jimmy Lee On his pee-pee Haha Jimmy Lee And then my bee Died peacefully He couldn't breathe Because of the pee Then Jimmy Lee Died painfully He couldn't take a pee Because of the bee Poor Jimmy Lee Is history And so's my bee Ohhh gee!
(laughs at himself)
I listened on the tape to see if there were any other goofy parodies like that, but it was just music for the rest of Side 1. Side 2 was blank.
Anyway, as for the real song, I thought it was pretty good, but I can see why it peaked so low. It sounded a little out of place for the mid-1980s.

It fell fast on AT40 after climbing to #28, and I have always wondered why. Anyway this was a pretty catchy song, I liked then as I still do now (since I really do not hear it much anymore). This sounds like the 1980s answer to "Jimmy Mack" as I have always believed.

I remember this one too. Not one of her more memorable hits, but I liked it.

I liked this song. It wasn't my favorite from her. But this album is excellent. My mother used to play it in the car all the time when I was a kid! Video clip

The album as a whole was weak, but she had a couple of strong singles with "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" and this one.
She was unable to replicate the pop radio success she had with "Freeway of Love" and "Who's Zoomin' Who" (which, along with this song, were all produced by Narada Michael Walden) but this became another big R&B hit for her, and of course she followed it up with her first #1 hit in 20 years when "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" was released. "Jimmy Lee" peaked at #2 R&B in January of 1987.

I live for this song. It's one of my favorite Aretha non-ballads. Such a catchy, euphoric tune. Her scatting at the end>>
Sidenote, that video is hilarious. Aretha's expressions are so off and don't get me started on the other actors' acting.

This is kind of cute. I love the early '60s sound in this.
