Saw the video for a mystery U2 song a few minutes ago on VH1 Hits. The video looked sorta dated, but I missed the closing credits, which explains why I don't know what the song is. The song had a catchiness to it, but the only line I can remember from the song is "men will rise..." I checked lyrics for a couple of their songs I've never heard, such as "Staring at the Sun" and "Desire", but both turned out to not be it. What is this song? EDIT: Changed the thread title since the question was answered and to open it up to more discussion. :)

a man will rise, and a man will fall from the sheer face of love, like a fly from a wall
it's no secret at all

Huh, I didn't even know they had a video for "The Fly". And I only learned a while back that it was the true first single from Achtung Baby. Looks like it's time for me to pay a visit to Launch.
I have to say, though, that it is possibly the catchiest track from that brilliant album. I mean, you really can't go wrong with anything from there.

The video is included on their Best of 1990-2000 DVD.
Anyways, I love this song, as I do the whole album.

Also didn't know it was the first single until, well, until I saw it in Daniel Shywaoub's Pop chart compendium 3 years ago.
I knew it wasn't an album cut in the same way all the others were, but I never would've guessed it was thought of as a strong enough tune to be the lead single. I'd always thought the first one was "Mysterious Ways," since it was the only one getting any recurrent airplay when "One" was out. (The time I got into "pop" music.)

Didn't it debut at number one in the UK? I think I remember seeing that, though I never heard it to this day.

Maybe, maybe not, but that wasn't the motivation behind releasing it first. The Fly was U2's statement single. They picked the song on the album that sounded the least like anything they had done before and said "here's the new U2, do you recognize us?" And yes, this went to #1 in the UK.

I love it. Very cool song and the guitar work is really awesome in this! And of course the lyrics are spectacular just like the lyrics in the majority of their songs from the 80s and early 90s.

I never listened to this from beginning to end. Since it didn't do so well on the charts, it got overshadowed after "Mysterious Ways" and "One" hit big.

Last month, in my usual year-end visit to Peru, I picked up the copy of Achtung Baby and uploaded it to my laptop. It had been a long time since I heard many of the songs in the album. I put the music on my iPhone and finally this morning the random selection in my iPhone chose "The Fly". GREAT song! A departure of their style, but the underlying percussion reminded me of their "Night & Day" cover from 1990. "The Fly" was U2's second UK #1 (after "Desire" ) and had the "honor" of stopping the 16-week run of Bryan Adam's "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" Achtung Baby was a GREAT album. So many good songs!!!
