I might find myself gushing a bit here, as I just saw this wonderful band in concert two days ago (and yes, they played this classic single, and yes, it was splendid!)
Released from the uber-acclaimed self-titled 2001 debut, I think this might be my very favorite BRMC song (to be sure: top 3, at least). Melancholy, beautiful, sinister, yet with not just a hint of youthful optimism in Peter Hayes' vocal delivery. Melodically, it couldn't possibly get better than this. It's a chorus anyone from Brian Wilson to Ian Brown would f**king kill for, and that anyone of any age is immediately struck by for its effective simplicity. It is undeniable, as is the fact that this song is a bonafide classic for this decade. Obviously, BRMC has wrongfully been denied the level of media exposure that other acts that broke out at the dawn of the 00's were granted, even though they have little to do with the "garage acts" they are lumped in with and put the majority of them to shame. But still, I can attest to the fact that when people personally experience this band live, they are forced to admit that they are truly something special. When you play to a crowd of 800 and sell 600 CDs that night, you know you've done something right. ;)
The mixing on "Love Burns", I might add, is perfect. The drums kick in at the precise moment you're wrapping the strumming intro around your head. Then, the song, from first verse to last refrain, just swirls around you, yet you remember every word and chord upon first listen (another sign of truly well-crafted tune). It's a song you must repeat over and over and over and you still won't be fulfilled by it, because it carries that bittersweetness that beckons but never betrays. It's a song I can see bringing both comfort and distress to the listener, depending on the context in which you experience it. For me, it's a soft beacon of hope, but one that dims before I can ever feel satisfied. I will keep coming back for more, BRMC.
BRMC=my anti-drug.
