Frankly, it probably wasn't one of her best career moves (especially as she was being derided by this point for being too "serious" post-She's so Unusual) releasing this as a single but I do love her rendition. I actually prefer the 'Special Mix' or what I guess was the radio mix.
If I could choose a third single to release instead of this off of True Colors, it would've been "911".

Ah, the single that stopped her career dead in its tracks. As LiT just mentioned, Cyndi's marketing advantage in those days was that she was goofy with an edge. At some point, she lost the goofy factor and decided to become a serious artist. This was the third in a string of 4 singles that jettisoned her unique image, so I am not surprised that it missed the top 10, and stopped her hitmaking traction. Sad, its a good remake with a strong message.

Well, she did land a top 10 with "I Drove All Night" in 1989- so maybe this single affected her albums performance thereafter.
