If this song were released today, it surely wouldn't hit the top 5. It had a nice long chart run and hit number 4. It also sold a million copies. There is a line in the song that goes "No hungry mouse to feed."

The lyric is actually 'No hungry mouths to feed'
I like this, she does a good rendition, but Nanci Griffith's reading is my favourite.

Sappy, formulaic ballad. I don't really like it.

Lol! You can say that about so many songs from that period. Hell, you can say that about so many songs from the mid-'90s! I like this song...I prefer it to "Wind Beneath My Wings", her bigger hit from that same time. Actually, "Wind Beneath My Wings" hit the charts a year and a half before. You must have meant about that same time. ;)

There is a line in the song that goes "No hungry mouse to feed." LOL, that reminds me of a lyrics I misheard in the song "Who" by the Newsboys!Β The correct lyrics were "Tender as a burger in your microwave".Β I could have sworn they said "...a booger in your microwave" As for the song we're talking about, I like this song and it's among my favorite Bette Midler song.Β

I like this song. It reminds me of my freshman year of college. :) But my favorite Bette song is "The Rose."

I like it. It reminds me of wartime... thanks to that episode of pop up video. It also reminds me of around that time when CBS used to air that show and Mario Bros 3 cartoon in that one hour time block.

JAM!Β I remember thinking my friends were sinners for pointing to their a$$es when Bette sang, "God is watching us."Β They joked around saying, "Is he watching us in the bathroom too?"
We had to do the song in sign language.
Also, one of my friends won a poetry contest using the first two lines from this song as his intro.Β Cheater!Β I also won a placement in that poetry book too, with a 100% original poem.Β Anthology of Young Poets was the name of the book, I think.
He did not give credit.

I put that "No Hungry Mouse To Feed" line in there, fully knowing the correct lyric. I just thought it was kind of funny that way. I like singing songs and changing just a word or two just to create a knew meaning.

I also think of war when I think of this song, so I have a negative feeling when I hear it. I know it was played a lot because we were in some comflict overseas. Was it the first Gulf War?

It was on my Top 50 Worse Songs Of All Time!! ... at number one :) LOL!!
I remember a list had 'Starship - We built this city' as the worse song of all time,b ut I thought this took the cake. Yucky stuff.
Northcoast - Yeah, it was released about the same time as GulfWar : The Original was going.. so yeah :)

Oof, I had the cassette single of this. I can't bear to listen to it now, but at the time thought it was great. Too overproduced and the lyrics are cheese.

It was the perfect song for that moment in time. Get Here by Oleta Adams is another song that smashed thanks to the Gulf War. Oh and Styx scored a mini comeback with Show Me The Way tapping into that war sentimentality.

My mom had the cassette single for this.
I'm not a big fan of it. Much prefer other songs.

Yeah the context of the times helped, but it's still ridiculous to me this cheesefest won Song of the Year over "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Vision of Love."

Not her best ballad for me (that's between "The Rose" and her "In My Life" cover), but it's solid.

It's weird...the original version makes me cringe but yet I love the Christmas re-working from Bette's holiday record.
