This was a hit in 1981 and I remember hearing it on the radio just once. Not sure where it peaked.

It peaked at #10 on the Billboard chart, but only got as high as #19 on R&R, which is probably why you only heard it on the radio once. It apparently sold more than it received airplay.
I liked the song, and Larry Carlton's guitar work on the song was excellent.
The song "100 Ways" by Quincy Jones featuring James Ingram reminded me of "Hill Street Blues" somewhat.

Phil Esterhaus would say for ending the introductory scene at the beginning of each episode, during which he would address the rest of the station on the upcoming events and issues of the day, with "Hey, let's be careful out there". It's sad that he died in the show's 3rd season.
