Billboard airplay # 27
Anyone know why this WASN'T released as a single in an era when albums had 6 or 7 commercial releases?
This is one of like 3 songs in the 80s that wasn't avail at retail ...

#35 R&R CHR/Pop (1987)
Top 20 (Scott Shannon's Rockin America Pre-R&R chart usage)
Thanks to his show, I probably would have never heard this song. I was in England at the time. Laura Gross who worked for KIIS -FM in LA (live via satellite to the UK) used to broadcast the top 40 and countdown the top 30 portion. She used play all of the debuts, however not once did she spin this song!
Now I am almost positively sure this would have cracked the top ten if it were released as an official single. I personally think that the label just decided to leave it on the album rather than release this as a single. Second of all, my mind tells that it was not intended to be a "single" in the first place.

Hey jebsib, you might want to take a closer look at the spelling of the title ;)
To be exact, it peaked at #15 on the July 25, 1987 of that chart. This was actually during the time that they were slowly evolving towards the R&R chart, so it was clear that they improvised their own chart, using several different publications (though how they got the number 15 peak of "Never Say Goodbye" a month after its R&R peak is far beyond me - I wonder if Gavin charted the song so high).
I liked the song and I agree that it probably would have hit the Top Ten on the chart (like "Wanted Dead Or Alive") had they released it as a single. Stations were playing this song as an album cut even while "Livin' On A Prayer" was climbing the chart. When they released "Wanted Dead Or Alive" in the spring of 1987, I had pretty much given up on the song ever hitting the chart. You can imagine my surprise when the song debuted on the R&R chart in May (I heard it on the May 30 edition of "Dave Sholin's Countdown USA"). As I expected, it did not go far, since it was an album track, on which many stations hesitated charting on their official playlists back then.

WHOOPS on my "MEVER", lol.
Correction: Reached #28 on Billboard's airplay chart, the first ever charted non-single on Hot 100 airplay (Followed later that year by Bon Jovi's 'Edge of a Broken Heart' & Madonna's 'Spotlight') ...

Thanks for all that information .
I always wondered why this never was a single . Interesting to know that it became the first airplay-only song to chart on the BB airplay chart .
It was released in the Uk : Aug 11 1987 Bon Jovi Never Say Goodbye 29-21-26-29

Yeah, I'm thinking that, at first, their policy didn't allow non-singles to chart even on their airplay chart. That explains why "Into The Groove" never made it.

Great song. And its help up extremely well.
I read somewhere the record company wanted this to be the third single rather than "Wanted Dead or Alive", but the band fought and won with WDOA released. This album was so big, the band could have easily had 5 or 6 top ten hits.

If it were released today, I bet it would do well at AC stations.

Love this song. Bon Jovi = best act of the 80s, hands down.

This was recently played as an optional on "American Top 40 - the 80s."

Solid. Very nostalgic with roller rink slow skates and all those middle school dances.
I'd rank this top 3 in terms of Bon Jovi ballads - along with I'll Be There For You and Always.

Should have been a bigger hit.
