It topped the pop chart for two weeks. 15 years ago this week in 1990, it debuted on the AC chart at #22 eventually peaking at #3 as mentioned on the US Music Survey. I like it. Here's a clip.

I always thought this song was kind of overrated. He had several better songs that didn't hit #1.

I'm not a fan of most of his music and this isn't any different.

Never understood why this song was such a big hit... I actually thought this whole CD was pretty terrible. With a couple of exceptions, I really only like his material from the Older album.

I believe Casey Kasem mentioned that it tied "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor as the biggest move so far that year.

It did hit #1 on the Hot 100 in 1990 but it had theshortest top 40 run for a #1 record since "Get Down Tonight" by KC and The SUnshine Band back 15 years eariler

I liked it at the time, but never as much as anything on the "Faith" album, or many of his earlier singles w/Wham.

I always thought this was a chart topper only because of the goodwill the Faith era built up for him with radio. It pretty much disappeared from pop radio rotation the second it left the chart. I enjoy the album but Freedom was the only real pop friendly song on it.

I enjoy the album but Freedom was the only real pop friendly song on it. Probably true. "Heal the Pain" is very poppy, but a decade or so too late to be in step with radio trends. Still, great song.

I agree. I like the song, but it's not one of his stronger singles at all. It was clearly a move to get people to take him more seriously, with the politically conscious lyrics and a "lyrics video" two decades before they were a thing. I guess it paid off in the short term, but I would say it hurt him in the long term. He was originally supposed to put out a part two to this album that was going to be more uptempo, but it was never released (although some of the songs from it, including "Too Funky" were). I always wondered if his career in the US would have turned out different if that album came out, instead of him taking a 6 year break and then releasing another downtempo album.

It's OK. Definitely one of the most forgotten #1 songs of the 90s.

I always assumed 'Freedom' was the lead single from Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1..

One of my favorite songs of all time. Yes it was a very cynical and curious lead single choice but as a song it's one of the strongest performances I've ever heard on record.

I go between this and "One More Time" as my favorite ballad from him. The lyrics in this speak truths even now. Fantastic song.
Could the "video" for this be the first lyric video ever?

Compared to most lyric videos now, yes. Though I think this Bob Dylan video would be recognized as the first one. Back on topic, I adore this song but I'm not too fond of the video. I prefer the studio footage of him recording the song to the actual video itself.
