This is a great song that radio has ignored in the last 20 years. :'(

I remember watching the TV show "America's Top 10" with Casey Kasem the week that this was #8! Of course I had the MCA 45 RPM single and wore it out! Mine even skipped where at the end it says "for you... Xanadu" and mine said "for you...oo oo oo". It is a very whispery vocal but it suits the song well. Now I did also watch this movie not too long ago and it is REALLY bad, but the music was the best!
I also liked the song "Magic" which hit #1, and the Electric Light Orchestra songs "All Over The World" and "I'm Alive" - oh yes and the Olivia/Cliff Richard duet "Suddenly". XANADU had I believe 5 charting Top 40 singles and was a very successful soundtrack!

I heard it on one of her records (not a CD) my family owns but I haven't heard it in a long time and don't remember it.

Well, I love the song. In fact, I'm listening to it right now!
Xanadu is Track 10 (the final track) on Olivia's Greatest Hits, Volume 2.

Even though I like it, its probably my least favorite of the big three Olivia songs from Xanadu. "Magic" is just great, and "Suddenly" was a nice ballad.
I still have to see the movie. I've heard it falls into the "Its so bad its good" category

I've heard it falls into the "Its so bad its good" category Xanadu is like a happy version of Clockwork Orange, when you are watching while under the influence of Saki, Heroin, Crack-Cocaine, and Horse Tranquilizers.

I've always liked the music from that movie. That'd be great if they'd put out "The Xanadu Megamix."

A place where nobody dared to go, the love that we came to know They call it xanadu
And now, open your eyes and see, what we have made is real We are in xanadu
A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star An everlasting world and you’re here with me, eternally
Chorus: Xanadu, xanadu, (now we are here) in xanadu Xanadu, xanadu, (now we are here) in xanadu
Xanadu, your neon lights will shine for you, xanadu
The love, the echoes of long ago, you needed the world to know They are in xanadu
The dream that came through a million years That lived on through all the tears, it came to xanadu
A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star An everlasting world and you’re here with me, eternally
Chorus
Now that I’m here, now that you’re near in xanadu Now that I’m here, now that you’re near in xanadu, xanadu

This song just missed topping the R&R chart in September, 1980 ("Late In The Evening" by Paul Simon edged it out of #1), and had a very unusual 6-2-5 chart move. Would have been even odder if it had hit #1! As for the song, I remember liking it at first and then getting tired of it quickly.

A great song. I've always liked ELO and this soundtrack was one of my alltime favorites. ELO's "I'm Alive" and "All Over The World" was just as good as Xanadu. Thanks for bringing this one up!

It really hit #2? Wow! I think it only reached like #7 or #8 in Billboard.

Yeah, I found that out twice from "Countdown America" with John Leader. First, when either "Twist Of Fate" or "Living In Desperate Times" was charting, ONJ was in the Countdown America Spotlight and this was one of the featured songs and in the intro, John referred to it as "The number two 'Xanadu'". Then, in mid-September of that year, the Top Five Flashback they ran before the #1 song was to 1980, and "Xanadu" was at #2 that particular week, behind "Late In The Evening" by Paul Simon. I think "Upside Down" was in the Top 40 that week. That song only spent a week on top while it spent a month atop the AT40 chart.

First, when either "Twist Of Fate" or "Living In Desperate Times" was playing, ONJ was in the Countdown America Spotlight and this was one of the featured songs and in the intro, John referred to it as "The number two 'Xanadu'". Then, in mid-September of that year, the Top Five Flashback they ran before the #1 song was to 1980, and "Xanadu" was at #2 that particular week, behind "Late In The Evening" by Paul Simon. This is a little off topic, but one of the biggest differences I saw between the two charts during the 80s with a #1 song was "Gypsy." I think it only hit #12 in Billboard but #1 in R&R. Of course that sort of thing became common beginning in 1992.

Conversely, "Mickey" by Toni Basil only peaked at #11 on the R&R chart (and spent only six weeks on) while it went all the way to #1 on Billboard.

Maybe it'll be played on AT10 someday if Casey re-does the theme for "title tracks from movies."

I don't think he's ever done that one before. Earlier in the year, they did "songs from movies", but not title tracks from movies. The two are similar, but so were "British Artists" and "Artists from the British Isles"

I always loved this song. Xanadu, and Magic both remind me of being a child, because they were both very popular... Don't you miss when radio was good, and varied ???

We used to rollerskate to this song back in the '80s.

Something To Talk About Chariots of Fire Stayin' Alive (although the film was titled "Staying Alive") Grease(!) The Rose Beauty & The Beast La Bamba Against All Odds Footloose Nice selection of songs I might add. :)
