The James Gang was a popular rock band of the early 70s, almost unknown to people who didn't listen to hard rock music. This is probably their most familiar hit, although it didn't perform well on the charts at the time of its release. It became more popular later, after Joe Walsh's made his name better known. Today it's a staple of the classic rock format (or at least it was the last time I listened to a classic rock station, which was several years ago).
The guitar riff is the song's first sound and most enduring feature. The opening licks, delivered without any accompaniment, immediately and forcefully establish a funk-rock tone. In fact, the song is so funky that Jackson's urban-formatted WJMI used to play it as an occassional oldie during the 80s.
