I was never really into R.E.M. and I'm still not, but wow what a good song here. The lyrics are great, the music is great, the chorus is hauntingly beautiful.
This came out during my senior year of high school.... I remember everyone was really into this song back then. R.E.M. wasn't really popular at my HS but this song definitely was.
Where did it peak on the charts?

It peaked at #38 on pop.
This song was pretty good, but they've had better.

My fave song of theirs by a country mile. Absolutely gorgeous. Their biggest hit here, it hit #3.
Underrated in America.

Kind of average for them, but still pretty good. They've had a lot of outstanding songs in their career, but I don't care much for their new one.

Not too shabby. I've only heard it a handful of times, which is probably a good thing.

I like this, but I think it's a little bit on the bland side. I think if they had released a more uptempo song in place of this one, they'd still be having hits right now.

I loved this. It was their best single since "E-bow the Letter," which is very underrated. Probably one of my Top 5 or 10 R.E.M. songs of all-time. This takes me back to my senior year.

Good song. My favorite from them is "Bang And Blame." Unfortunately, it wasn't on their greatest hits CD.

It was decent.. Not R.E.M.'s best.. I think one of the reasons for it's popularity was because it was from the Jim Carrey movie based on Andy Kaufman's life, "The Man on the Moon"..
The song did spend 3 weeks at #1 on my personal chart (mainly because artists like Korn and Limp Bizkit were big that year)

A good song, but they have a lot of songs better: "Man on the moon", "Half a world away", "World leader pretend", "Talk about the passion"...

I love it. I think it's beautiful. One of my favorites from them, even though not my particular favorite.

People say R.E.M. aren't as good in the later part of their career.
If this isn't proof otherwise, then I don't know what is.
This song owns most of what's on radio today.

This is a good song, but no way would I put it among my REM favorites, like "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" and "Losing My Religion" among others...

It was their best song of the late 90's. I REALLY enjoyed this when it came out, and I still love it.
Very sincere track.
