I never could understand why so many people hated that song. It was a true story. The songwriter's friend was dying of a brain tumour, and was telling everyone how much he loved them before he left. I always loved that song and still do.

I like the song too. I think it's great when you can make a buck off of your friend's death.
kidding, just kidding.

I was only two in 1974, so I don't know, but I think this was one of those songs that became a joke because of its gross overplay (Other '70s songs that fit into this category were "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree", "Feelings" and "You Light Up My Life") This song spent six weeks atop the R&R chart and I believe was the top song of that year ("I Honestly Love You" was the only other song to log six weeks on top in 1974), so that pointed to its being overplayed.

Westlife's cover is the only song of theirs I can tolerate.

BTW, in case anyone's curious (since the artist's name isn't mentioned), the one who did the original in 1974 was Terry Jacks.

Saw the subject line of this thread and cringed.Β I hated that song when I was a kid.Β Something so very depressing about it.Β Still have the same reaction.Β

Even worse than the 45 of Terry Jacks' release in 1974 of this song, was the B-side called "Put The Bone In" which was like some old mother hubbard tale or something. really stupid. and it was 1:45 long!

This tune was #1 for 3 weeks on Billboard and finished #2 on the year-end chart of 1974 behind "The Way We Were" by Barbara Streisand
