Originally on 1984's "Footloose" soundtrack, this single was released in 1985 and shot straight to #1.
She got her start singing backup for Stevie Wonder, and also recorded the "Family Ties" theme song with Johnny Mathis.
This is another HOT ol' skool jam! :)

I don't like it. "Free" and "Silly" are much better, among several more singles. "Silly" is in my Top 10 of all time.

Actually, "Let's Hear It For The Boy" was released in 1984. I remember how it burned up the charts. In fact, I remember on the May 19 edition of "Countdown America" with John Leader, he did a Flashback to 1978, on which "With A Little Luck" by Wings was number one and he said that "This week, at number one is a song that flew up the chart like it had wings". Its chartrun (up the chart) was: 35-19-9-5-2-1... At the same time, Steve Perry was moving up the chart at the same rate, only a few spots lower, with "Oh Sherry". But Deneice was way too strong for him. Oh well, at least Steve had a few number one hits when he was still with Journey - on R&R at least.

This song cracks me up - it's such 80's cheese but great at that! My friends joke about it all the time.

Reminds me of a girl I liked when we were both in the 6th grade.
There's another song that sounds similar to it. I think it's "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister."

I don't know if its SOS, but you might be talking about the equally awful "New Attitude" by Patti Labelle, or the crappy "Freeway Of Love" by Aretha or "Pink Cadillac" by Natalie Cole. 4 good vocalists who are capable of so much more.

Stop it! I love all those songs, altjough I used to get "Pink Cadillac" and "Freeway of Love" mixed up ALL the time, too me they sound alike. Deniece Williams is a great vocalists and she has a slew of Grammy's to go with her vocal talent, I think only Aretha and Anita have more.Β I remember on an episode of Will and Grace where Matt Damon guest starred and he and Jack sang tis song against each other in a competition, it was so funny!

A guilty pleasure for me. As is the cover version on the Queer as Folk soundtrack.

I should, in theory - considering I live for Deniece and just about anything 80's musically - love this... but I can't stand it at all. While I'm glad it was such a huge hit for her, I'm still in disbelief a song as lousy as "Let's Hear It For Boy" ended up being her signature. Yuck.

I don't have many songs that I can only enjoy ironically or as a soundtrack to something funny, but this is one. I never enjoy hearing it on its own, but when it's used or reference in a comedic way or for a comedic purpose, I always laugh and think it's well used in that sense.

This song never gets old to me. I still love it. Definitely one of the best from the 80s! So fun and catchy!

Always hated this cheesy song as it got stuck in my head many times. Often heard it as an 80s flashback on the AC stations (Lite FM 93.9 and 100.3) whenever they played an uptempo cut or on defunct 103.5 Jammin' Oldies when I was younger. My favorites from her are "Free" and "It's Gonna Take a Miracle". music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI7YHZVc7mM
