This is my favorite version of the song. I know their been several different versions. I remember hearing more of an up tempo version by another artist I forget the name. Bill Withers is one of my favorite 70 artist. His music is classic and so smooth. He's not your typical balladeer singing boring love songs over and over again. His music is inspiring and meaningful. I have the Greatest Hits Collection.

The uptempo version that you've heard is most likely the one by Club Nouveau, which topped the chart for a pair of weeks in March, 1987. I actually prefer that version, though I hated the heck out of it when it was popular (was SO glad when Starship replaced them on top with "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"). I don't like the Bill Withers version much for some reason, probably because I heard Club Nouveau's version first, which may seem hard to believe, but back in those days, I didn't listen to much AC music (which would be about the only format that would play the original version of the song back then). And remember, I was but a few months old when that song was out, so I think it goes without saying that I don't remember it when it was on the charts and apparently, it didn't get much recurrent airplay in the years after it fell off, because I don't remember hearing it at all. When I heard Club Nouveau's version in early 1987, I assumed that it was an original song, until it debuted on the chart and Casey Kasem said that it was a remake of an old Bill Withers song. I was like, "Who the heck is Bill Withers?"

Well Bill Withers had a few hits but I think he's kinda underrated in some sense. You can find one of his songs used in a recent television ad commerical; Lovely Day which has also been sampled 3 times from what I've heard. Just The Two Of Us was sampled by Will Smith and Aint No Sunshine and Use Me are some of his biggest hits. Come to think about DMX sampled Aint No Sunshine.

Ulij20, I had a similar experience when the remake became popular. I didn't realize it was a remake, and was mostly familiar with the song due to my classmates singing it ad nauseum. Meanwhile my brother, who happened to be familiar with the original, was unaware that a remake existed. This led to some amusing confusion!

Lean On Me by Bill Withers was #1 for 3 weeks on the pop chart and was on the best #1 songs of the 70's

Good song, I like the original more than Club Nouveau's version.
