One of the all-time classic blues songs, Muddy has recorded at least two studio versions and has performed it live countless times. My favorite is the one he did with Johnny Winter for the 1977 record album 'Hard Again'. It's been covered by Hendrix and the Stones - in fact there are a number of people who are more familiar with one of those recordings - but Muddy Waters owns this song; no one else will ever be able to improve on it.
Anyone who's seen the Martin Scorcese picture The Last Waltz will remember Muddy doing this backed by The Band. Even as wonderful as that rendition is, this one exceeds it for sheer, raw power.
The song was composed as a response to Bo Diddley's I'm A Man.
