Digging around through some of my records while ago, I came across this early 80s disc 'Charley Sings Everybody's Choice'. For some reason I had forgotten that looney album title but I hadn't forgotten the two hit songs it produced: this one and Mountain Of Love, an excellent country cover of the Johnny Rivers classic.
Charley Pride was never a favorite of mine, not least because country was never my favorite genre. But even among country artists he ranks pretty low with me. The songs from this album are an exception. You're So Good When You're Bad had such a beautiful Memphis soul sound to it that it garnered airplay at urban radio (or at least it did on Jackson's WJMI).
Many people who don't listen to country know this song from a famous episode of Designing Women. All the women and their boyfriends (and Suzanne's ex-husband) head to the mountains for a snow-skiing weekend. A bad storm (or something) causes the slopes to be closed and all the women and men are confined to their rooms for the entire holiday. A major battle of the sexes takes place, during which Julia makes her famous "and the robbin', and the rapin', and the pilligin'" speech. The episode ends in the hotel bar when this song comes on (and plays through with only minimal dialogue interruption) and all the couples pair off to dance.
