Hot remake! Mariah sounds effortless with her vocals, and Luther's voice is not too shabby either.

I don't like the song to begin with but I'll take Mariah and Luther's powerful vocals over Lionel and Diana's paper-thin vocals anyday.

I like this much better than the original. It was easily my favorite song of 1994. It had a very fast chart run for a song that charted in the PPW era. It hit #6 and yet was on and off the chart in maybe 12 weeks.
I remember hearing this song for the first time. I turned the dial to a local pop station and couldn't figure out why on earth they were playing a 13 year old Diana Ross song! Obviously, it had been a long time since I'd heard the original...

I loved their version, however the original is just a classic.
It has nothing to do with whose vocals were better.
Even Mariah couldn't improve on this song.
This is probably my favorite Mariah remake, however I feel she never does them better than the originals.
(Open Arms, Bringin' on the heartbreak, Against All Odds, etc).

Ugh, just fucking DREADFUL.
Yes, Mariah has a "bigger" voice than Diana Ross, but what the latter lacks in range she makes up for in sheer emotion. Mariah might as well have been singing her shopping list.

I find it hilarious that a fan of Mandy Moore constantly criticizes Mariah for lack of emotion and blandness when those are the exact reasons Mandy Moore is at the bottom of the pit of teen queens.

Although Lionel and Diana recorded their vocals separately due to inside tension, the chemistry was still remarkably there, making thier version the definitive one.

Interesting comment, since I have not heard the song on the radio in many years.

Perhaps he was referring to the original by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, although that one's not played often enough (on the AC stations in my area, anyway) to be considered "overplayed".
BTW, I much prefer the Luther/Mariah remake over the dull original by Lionel and Diana.

On the US Music Survey Mark Wallengren mentioned it peaked at #3 on the AC chart.

Endless Love reached #2 in 1994 and sadly was Luther's biggest pop hit

One of my least favorite Mariah songs. It's so dull that I've never gotten more than halfway through the song.

I'm a little surprised at all the negative comments for this...
Personally, I grew up on this version which is perhaps why I much prefer it to the original. Love this, such a classy duet.
Here's Mariah & Luther (God rest his soul) performing this live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1994:
Vocals for dayssss!

It doesn't matter which version it is, I was never crazy about this song. Luther, Mariah, Lionel, and Diana have all done better. Much better.

I prefer this version, but that's not saying much. This song is a perfect example of the style of ballads that I'm glad went out of fashion at the turn of the millennium.

Several reactions. First, I'm quite surprised at the more common comments from Pulsers on how ballads are boring. People said that about Stay with me, Chandelier, and before that about Say Something and Someone like you. I guess that's the new sign of the times. I also think it may be a cultural thing. Ballads practically disappeared from mainstream in this century. Whereas in the Latin markers, ballads and slow tempos are still very popular and I could say required for an artist to release as a single. We know and appreciate Shakira, Thalia, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin more for their ballads than for their uptempos. Rock and pop groups also have multiple ballads that went multi week number ones. They are part of our musical culture... And we still appreciate the classic ones. Endless love is one of those classics. It was commonly included in the top tier of the millennium countdowns. It was a big hit of the 80s that's still consider a great classic. I love it. Yeah. STILL love it. I think Lionel and Diana did a superb job capturing the essence of the song in the context of the movie. A First love. They sound super tender, sweet, innocent, truly stupidly in love. The production highlights that feeling. Maybe some would consider that mix as boring. To me, it's perfect connection to that story, it's transporting to a time of birds flying in the air on top of your head I remember singing this at a karaoke with my loved one, few days before my trip to study in the US. And we both were crying at the end. We were stupidly in love... With our first lasting love In terms of THIS Luthiah version... Ugh!!! WROOOONG! beeeeepppp!!! Really. It was an utter MESS. What was a subtle declaration of honest love turned into a messy screamfest of egos. No subtlety or tenderness at all. It was all a melisma war! How many times can you say love in the verse? Or in a single sentence??!!!! Who can do the longest and most embellished run? Who can out-sing the other in the last seconds? The focus was not on the lyrics or the connection with the public. The focus was on Mariah's and Luther's vocal antics. Thus, they managed to destroy the song, stripped it from its meaning and replace its sugar with 10x more saccharine: similarly sugary but much more FAKE!
