I love it. It can still give me chills when they start really getting into toward the end; "and I giiiiive"

I love Diana Ross, but her voice was not meant for a song like this.

In terms of THIS Luthiah version... Ugh!!! WROOOONG! beeeeepppp!!! Really. It was an utter MESS. What was a subtle declaration of honest love turned into a messy screamfest of egos. No subtlety or tenderness at all. It was all a melisma war! How many times can you say love in the verse? Or in a single sentence??!!!! Who can do the longest and most embellished run? Who can out-sing the other in the last seconds? The focus was not on the lyrics or the connection with the public. The focus was on Mariah's and Luther's vocal antics. Thus, they managed to destroy the song, stripped it from its meaning and replace its sugar with 10x more saccharine: similarly sugary but much more FAKE! I don't know why some of you act like the original version lacks vocal runs. In the 1st verse Ross holds out "loooove" and "taaake" and "maaake." The two of them do a run on "Iiii" and "looo-ooove with you." That's just the beginning. There are other runs as well (that "you-ou" for instance). And what does the repeated use of "love" have to do with the remake? That was all in the original version.

Butter voice melted with butter voice. This version is far superior. The song is saccharine for my tastes but vocalists like these two can take whatever and make it sounds magical. It's all in the tone.
Diana and Lionel are legends but vocally they were taking to class, whipped and shipped out

I loved their version, however the original is just a classic. It has nothing to do with whose vocals were better. Even Mariah couldn't improve on this song. This is probably my favorite Mariah remake, however I feel she never does them better than the originals. (Open Arms, Bringin' on the heartbreak, Against All Odds, etc). Agreed.

Not a quote from 14 years ago. LOL

Mariah performed this recently - and beautifully - in Vegas:
The live performance from 1994 and the official video have 87 million views on YouTube between them.

Apart from Luther and Mariah just having better voices than Lionel and Diana, I prefer this version because of Mariah's youthfulness. The original song was written for a movie about teenagers in love, so I've always found it odd they had Lionel (32 years old) and especially Diana (37 years old) singing it. Mariah at 24 years old (and recently married) made more sense as it feels more like it is her first love, or at least a young love.

I slightly prefer the original Diana Ross/Lionel Richie version even though the Mariah Carey/Luther Vandross cover was everywhere on the radio in my market when it came out (Lite FM 93.9, 100.3, 101.9 the Mix, B96, WGCI, and V103 all played it). While AC radio and CHR (both mainstream and rhythmic) played it on heavy rotation, not sure if Urban or Urban AC did the same (While Luther was still a staple in those formats, Mariah was more of a Pop/AC artist back then).

I grew up with the Diana/Lionel version, so I definitely respect and acknowledge it. But over the years I've come to like this version more. Luther and Mariah have such gorgeous tones, they sound angelic together.
The Mariah only edit of the song is amazing as well, just shows how flawless her vocal was.

I grew up on the Lionel Richie/Diana Ross original version but when I heard Mariah and Luther - I got hooked on that version and it's the one I purposely listen to, usually on Sunday nights.

I didn't grow up on any version cause I'm too young but I prefer Diana's version. Although, theres nothing wrong with Mariah's version.

The official video of a live performance has 98.4 million views and will pass 100 million views in the next few weeks:
The actual (studio) video was uploaded much later and has 15 million views, so combined they are near 115 million views:

This is Mariah's strongest duet hands down. These vocal powerhouses came together and just beautifully and MASTERFULLY blended and harmonized their voices like nothing I had ever heard at that time in my life when this was released. Both of them go up and down so effortlessly with so much control and range; I get goosies every time I listen. Both of their voices move me and this song has one of my favorite intros to a duet song, ever.
Ugh, this song is a treasure.
