I am totally in LOVE with this song. I barely re-discovered it and I am just so addicted to it lol. The music video was awesome.

I can see why she was so upset about "Columbia" not giving it an official release. The song has a really mellow vibe and it's become one of my favourites from "Butterfly".

One of the Butterfly highlights- cool vibe on the track. And, of course, when she had her literal breakdown, it took on new meaning other than the man-breaking-her-heart theme.

I thought it sounded like BTNH's "Crossroads" when I heard it years ago. I love it.

The Best Mariah Song from The Best Mariah Album...period. I can understand why she was pissed that this didn't get a proper release from her label. The song and video were amazing...and the fact that this remains a fan favorite after all these years speaks volumes. The same can be said for "The Roof". She experimented with new sounds during this era and had the guts to try to release them, despite the pushback from her ultra conservative label. She needs to go back to this.

Had this been given a proper release it would have been one of her biggest hits. So good.

RE chart stats- "Breakdown" was listed first when the single debuted on the R&B chart, as it ranked above "My All' in that week on R&B Airplay. It peaked at No. 13 on R&B Airplay on the March 14, 1998 chart (its 19th week on); by the time the single debuted on the May 9 R&B chart, "Breakdown" dropped 54-63 on R&B Airplay, in its 29th week ("My All" entered R&B Airplay at No. 69 that week).
I imagine the track was officially promoted to urban radio- and, it also peaked in the top 20 at rhythmic radio.

This and "The Roof" go back and forth as my favourite by her. This is probably the better song though. Musically it manages to be subtle and catchy at the same time, and lyrically it really is fantastically well written. Mariah's at her best when the melds the personal, commercial and artistic like she does here.

A great, great song. Mariah really failed to progress where songs like this and The Roof totally paved the way for her to really latch on and cement her legacy with great R&B. Instead, she chose to pretty much work on throw away R&B aside from a few bright spots post Butterfly.

One of the few perfect songs ever put down bitch. Lyrically, production, vocals, emotions and video. Mimi at her finest and during a time she pulled of urban without even trying to walk that fine line as a global iconic artist vs her true affinity to urban music only. This, The Roof and her most recent masterpiece "Dedicated" speak to her talents with the pen game.

There is so much to like about this song. The lyrics are simple, yet in a great way; they are simple in the way that when you feel something, the feelings are simple in words but deep in feeling. Mariah's muted vocal works really well, too, in how it symbolizes her hiding her feelings. And then of course she wails at the end when it all gets to be too much. Perfect.
This is the first singer/rapper collaboration that felt like a true collaboration to me. Mariah incorporated the Bone Thugs style of rapping and music with her R&B sound and pop melodies to create something truly original. It annoys me when Beyonce gets credited for the staccato rap-singing style because Mariah had already started doing that on this song (i.e. before anyone knew Beyonce).
In terms of the pop Mariah elements, it needs to be stated how beautiful the melody on "Breakdown" really is; just listen to it in this format:

Beyoncé/Destiny's Child are credited for staccato singing because they featured it prominently on their songs and on huge hits at that. Songs like "Bug a Boo" or "Bills, Bills, Bills" are known for it.
"Breakdown" is an amazing song, but it wasn't a huge single and it wasn't influential. In fact, Mariah herself saying that she wanted to incorporate Bone Thungs' style does not help the case.

I am not saying Mariah/"Breakdown" was the main influence, but I have seen sources say Beyonce was the first to do it (i.e. originator). That is factually untrue. I would agree Beyonce had more of an influence in the same way Mariah working with ODB is what influenced the pairing of singers and rappers even though Mariah wasn't the first to do it. I would correct anyone who stated Mariah was the originator of that type of collaboration in the same way I am saying Beyonce was not the originator of a more rap-style of singing. I don't see why Mariah saying she wanted to incorporate Bone Thugs' style doesn't help her case. Beyonce and others doing it is them incorporating a more rhythmic/hip-hop style into their phrasing, which is what Mariah was doing.
