With Crazy Frog's "Axel F" mashup starting to pick up, I thought I'd throw this question out there:
To my knowledge (and of course I could be wrong), there's only one mashup that's actually hit the R&R CHR chart. Does anyone know what song I'm thinking of?
Songs that had a few stations playing a mashup version ("Karmastition", "Rock Your Body/Rock With You") don't count. The song I'm thinking of had probably 99% of its airplay being the "mashup" version. I'll start giving clues if no one gets it.

Since that would be too obvious an answer, I'm assuming that you're not counting "Numb/Encore"?

I could have totally covered myself by saying that was a "Numb" remix and not a separate song, but no, I just didn't think of it at all. OK, there's two. What's the 2nd one? ;)

I can rephrase my question to make myself look slightly less stupid now: What was the first mashup to hit the R&R CHR chart? (And no, it wasn't Numb/Encore.)

Wasn't there a song combining "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Baby I Love Your Way" by Peter Frampton a while back? I'm not sure if it was a different artist covering both songs and combining them, or if it was just a mash-up of the originals, but could that be it?

How did the following mashups do?
Fragma - Toca's Miracle DNA Featuring Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner

New version of the songs covered by a different artist (Will To Power), so it's not a mashup. I was about to say "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", but that only became a hit after Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand rerecorded it as a duet.

What about Robert Palmer's "Mercy Mercy Me" from 1991? I've seen that listed as "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You".

I dunno... I always thought of "Tom's Diner" as a remix, not a mashup. Unless the backing track DNA used was originally from a different song.

I dunno... I always thought of "Tom's Diner" as a remix, not a mashup. Unless the backing track DNA used was originally from a different song. Yeah, I always thought it was a remix too. The page on allmusic.com says that DNA just took Vega's vocals and put them over a different beat. If anyone can show that DNA released a song with the same beat before "Tom's Diner", then this is the answer, but I've never seen any evidence that this is a mashup. What about Robert Palmer's "Mercy Mercy Me" from 1991? I've seen that listed as "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You".
Doesn't count because Robert Palmer never had them as separate songs. Mst3k's explanation about Will To Power applies here. Clue: The song I'm thinking of is from the 00's. Of course as I said in the beginning, I don't know that I'm right, so keep guessing 80's/90's songs if you think there's an earlier mashup.

Does "A Little Less Conversation" - which was Elvis Vs. JXL - count, or was that also only a remix?

Did that song chart? I don't recall it. Either way, the song I'm thinking of was before Elvis vs. JXL became popular. You're on the right track though. It's a dance song.

Not sure about the track from this decade, but what about "Right Here/Human Nature" by S.W.V.?

The only one I can think of from this decade is "I'll Fly With You" by Gigi D'Agostino. It might qualify as a mashup, since the "Bla Bla mix" that was widely played was a mash of two tracks from his album.

I don't remember it charting for sure, but around here we got a lot of play of Beyonce's whatever and 50 Cent's "In Da Club."

The only version that got significant play in the US was the I'll Fly With You vs. Bla Bla Bla mix. The two singles were released separately in Europe.

I don't remember it charting for sure, but around here we got a lot of play of Beyonce's whatever and 50 Cent's "In Da Club." Again, not a mashup because there's no separate Beyonce track that uses those lyrics. It's just a remix, a la Ja Rule's mix of "I'm Real". I don't think it came anywhere near charting anyway.

The original version of "Right Here" didn't include the sample of "Human Nature" (that version was released about a year later, and became the bigger hit). But I think the SWV vocals were re-recorded, so it's kind of a remix/mashup hybrid (like "Numb/Encore").

I'm sure this probably isn't the song you're thinking of, but I remember in the Mid 90's George Michael's 2nd single off of his Queen tribute album was Killler/Papa Was a Rolling Stone - which combined those two songs.
It got decent airplay for a little while but I'm guessing it ultimately failed to chart on CHR

"Killer/Papa Was A Rolling Stone" actually did chart for about a month, peaking at number 28 back in the summer of 1993. I think in Gavin, it reached into the Top 20, but I'll have to check on that. Gavin Magazine's reporting panel was made of many small market stations, which played more of a variety of songs; therefore, some songs that barely touched the Top 30 in R&R got into the Top Ten in Gavin. ("Wide River" by Steve Miller comes to mind).

"The Grease Mega-Mix"?

"The Grease Mega-Mix"? I'm probably wrong but I just had to throw in a guess. I thought about this one for a while before posting the original question, but I don't think it counts as a mashup. It's a medley of 3 different Grease songs. There's no "mixing" of the songs except at the transition points between them. In a typical mashup, you've got a DJ mixing the vocals of one song over the beat of another, or mixing two songs' vocals together. The one I was thinking of was "I'll Fly With You" which was guessed a few posts up by mst3k.

What about the mashup of Mariah Carey's "Emotions" and The Emotions' "Best Of My Love"
Or the Rozalla "Everybody's Free" with Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone."
