This is the only hit for this Detroit group and was done after their first album. They did churn out a follow-up but didn't repeat the success of Float On. However, there was a lampooned version of it called Bloat On. I remembered that version really cracked me up. It was hilarious.

Good song, although it would've been better as an instrumental. I always crack up on the one group member's introduction... "Cancer! And my name is Larry!" What a voice...

Good song, although it would've been better as an instrumental. I always crack up on the one group member's introduction... "Cancer! And my name is Larry!" What a voice... The song peaked at number two on Billboard, yet only got as high as number eleven on R&R. It wasted no time getting up that high, either, but then hit a brick wall. It did have a rather slow fall, though. On Billboard, it only was ranked in the 90s on the 1977 year end chart, and it wasn't even a victim of the November 1 cutoff rule. Someone pointed this out on Rob Durkee's site and I was surprised to find this out. I mean, yes it did have a rather fast rise and fast fall, but it seems it would have been ranked at least in the seventies. Anyone remember Cheech & Chong's parody of this song called "Bloat On (featuring the Bloaters)"? The loud belches at the beginning of the song - LOL!

And you finally figured that out all by yourself! (jk) Ulij20, I did mention at the beginning of my post about that lampooned track Cheech and Chong did. It does crack me up when I heard it at night on 15 WLAC in Nashville (and yes I could pick that station up from Henderson, Texas during the 70s) many ions before they started to do the 'yak-yak-yak!' By the way, if you have not looked at the bottom part in the opening thread about their chart history (not the quote signature, mind you), you probably didn't know I put it there. But at least you've broaden us with the info and we appreciate that. No love lost, my man! :)

The full 12 minute version is available on one of the early Smooth Grooves CD comps that Rhino put out. Love the song, especially the music as Aaron pointed out. The band member introductions are stupid but it was a product of the times, and is just a super period piece.
I edited this for length of song, which I incorrectly stated as 17 minutes. Even that's a little too much to digest.

I just discovered this smoothness, the 12 min version is a journey.

Never heard of it until I started listening to old 70s online radio music stations recently. I like this one.
