^339k so far almost gold which is not bad at how low sales are .beyonce, mariah and xtina has powerhouse voices which is very rare in the music industry plus all of those 3 are TRAINED SINGERS and they were out YEARS before Rihanna so the success she has for an artist 2.5-3 years is amazing 1st cd 2.5 ww,2nd 3.1 ww,5.6 ww in 2-3 years?i call that gr8 and isnt just by luck you have to have some ounce of talent, can u go onstage and do what she does? i am by no means saying she is xtina, beyonce,or mariah or even kelly clarkson(she has a gr8 voice) because they have rare voices, long careers and had prior training before being an artist in the music industry

I didn't even think the performance at the MTV awards was entertaining at all. It almost seemed a bit embarassing to me. And I don't think dance lessons will help, either. She just seems to be a failure at all movement. Her sales, unlike last time, are okay this time around, but she's definitely a singles artist.

When was the last time a #1 song on the airplay chart never hit #1 on any format? This must be very rare. It's Top 3 on three different formats, and is by far leading any other song combined airplay wise....but it's not #1 on any format.

Who would've thunk that a song about an umbrella during the summer was ever get this big? :)
I think eventually that she'll get the #1 spot on pop after Fergie's.

I remember people when only the title of the song was released...they were all like "WTF?" "What a stupid title" and then after it was released they were all like "Stand under my umbrella ella ella eh eh" "yea this song is so tight"

Wow, who would've thought the format that usually abandons Rihanna is the format where this song only reaches #1 at? Great news.

The reason "Umbrella" hit #1 Urban and not CHR/Pop is (sorry to be blunt) J. T. isn't black, and Fergie's song is too pop/rock sounding

T. isn't black, and Fergie's song is too pop/rock sounding That's generally true, but I don't think it applies in this case. Urban usually doesn't play Umbrella. Umbrella isn't even very urban, and she's had other much more urban singles that haven't gotten played, but a song like this just can't be denied. And Umbrella not going to #1 on Pop is circumstantial anyway, since they sent SUAD too soon. It's not because this song was too urban or because Rihanna isn't white.

Good point - I always wondered why they bothered giving Jay-Z credit on the song, when all he does is a 10-second (?) rap at the very beginning - that makes sense that Jay-Z's name would be on the credits to help it on the Urban chart

Rihanna: Record breaker? (Tuesday July 17, 2007 05:08 PM) Rihanna is expected to break chart history this weekend, when "Umbrella" becomes the longest consecutive Number One this century. The US star's duet with Jay Z claimed a ninth week at the pop summit on Sunday and is again expected to hold its position. According to early midweek figures, "Umbrella" will hold off competition from the likes of Kate Nash and Timbaland in securing the top spot. If that happens, the song will overhaul Gnarls Barkley, who scored nine straight weeks at Number One with "Crazy" last year. It would also signal the longest period a single has remained at the top of the singles chart since Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" in 1994. uk.news.launch.yahoo.com/dyna/article.html?a=/070717/340/hcw6z.html&e=l_news_dm
