Another week at the top for 'Umbrella' As expected, Rihanna's Umbrella coasts to a third week at No. 1 on the national radio airplay audience chart compiled by Nielsen BDS, Arbitron and Radio & Records. But it loses total audience for the first time, a 5.5% drop, 1-1 last week Rihanna/Umbrella (down 5.5% in total audience): It's not a slam-dunk that Rihanna loses her crown next week; she could somewhat reverse her decline and, more likely, Sean Kingston's growth could slow. But the strong possibility of a new No. 1 exists.

The Travis Barker Remix is finally on iTunes. But it's too late to really help sales though

Oh, my!! These ideas or useless remixes released too late!! Like Girlfriend's remix when it was already with a -1000 bullet!! I'm still annoyed about Rihanna's not topping the Pop chart... instead of supporting SK, radio should have kept supporting THIS song

I LOVE the rock remix to this. It's the one I play now! I can't believe it didn't get to #1! This is the type of song that would spend like 7 weeks on top!

You know what i don't think it matters AT ALL that this song didn't hit #1 on Top 40. The only people it's going to matter to is chart people like us. Everyone else in the entire country probably assumes this was a #1 hit for a long time. In the end that's all that matters. It's still a #1 hit whether it hit #1 on Top 40 or not. The real travesty would've been if it missed #1 on the Hot 100 and obviously that didn't happen.

True, except that more than likely more casual music listeners (at least my friends) rather just flip on the radio on the weekend and hear Ryan Seacrest announce what's #1 and listen to the countdown then bother looking it up on the internet via Billboard site for the Hot 100. Which he will not announce Umbrella as the #1 song in the nation.

'Umbrella' shades 'Girls' for No. 1 spot In an extremely close race, Rihanna's Umbrella attracted slightly more radio listeners than Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls and earned a fourth week at No. 1 on the national airplay audience chart. As determined by the combined informational resources of Nielsen BDS, Arbitron and Radio & Records, Rihanna picked up about 119 million audience impressions (number of plays on radio stations across the country multiplied by number of estimated listeners at the time of each play). Kingston had slightly more than 117 million and looks like the favorite to take No. 1 next week.

It's weird how the #1 song now can have only 119 million audience impressions when just two years ago Mariah was #1 with a 230 million audience impression.

CHART COMMENTARY from JAMES MASTERTON 23/07/07 Since the inception of the singles chart in 1952, just five singles have had continuous spells at Number One that run into double figures. 'Cara Mia' by David Whitfield, 'Rose Marie' by Slim Whitman, 'Everything I Do (I Do It For You)' by Bryan Adams, 'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston and 'Love Is All Around' by Wet Wet Wet are now joined by a sixth - 'Umbrella' by Rihanna and Jay-Z which, as I am sure you have worked out by now, proudly spends its tenth week at the top of the UK singles chart. Whatever you think of the record, however annoying it is to hear tinnily on the back of a bus or on the uninspired playlists of Local FM and however much you may curse the way the title of the song has unwittingly echoed the miserable British summer, there is no escaping the fact that to outsell every other track available for ten straight weeks is nothing less than a phenomenal achievement. It is now officially the longest running Number One of the century and its ten week total is now the longest since Wet Wet Wet clocked up 15 weeks with 'Love Is All Around' in 1994.
Technically 'Umbrella' now ranks as the joint sixth longest running Number One of all time, the ranks of double figure Number One singles swelled by two other singles - 'I Believe' by Frankie Laine and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen whose total number of weeks at the top also propel them into the all-time list. Indeed it is because of one of those singles that there are actually two records for "longest run at Number One". The Bryan Adams single holds the consecutive record at 16 weeks but Frankie Laine can claim a longer run thanks to the 18 week total of 'I Believe' back in 1955

Well, Mariah and Beyonce were unusually high. There were Hot 100 Airplay #1s during that timewith relatively low impressions (like Oh and Hips Don't Lie)

I really dislike this song. Wish my station wouldn't play it. What a crappy Summer for music, IMO.
