She wrote this song for the Butterfly album with Walter Afanasieff. It's probably my favorite on Glitter just because the vocals and production are both on point and I was so glad to hear that instead of those Jimmy & Terry ballads she'd been doing. It should have been the second single instead of "Never Too Far". Agreed with this entire post but one thing I've always wondered is: yes, LTW was co-written with Walter A. back in the Butterfly sessions when their blowout happened, but as it is on the Glitter album - is it produced by Jimmy & Terry alongside Mariah or was it produced by Walter and Mariah in 1997 and she just practically put on Glitter a song essentially finished that year? I don't think she has ever spoken in detail about LTW, except to highlight it as one of the best vocals of her career as a recording artist. Nor has she ever performed it except for a little snippet for a fan who won a contest for a 'private mini concert' in 2014.

I don't have the CD in front of me, but aren't Jam/Lewis credited as additional producers or something? That shows it was recorded in some form back in the 90s, but then Jam/Lewis did some touch up when it came time for Glitter.

According to the CD booklet, "Lead the way" is produced by Mariah and Walter exclusively. There aren't any additional producers.

This is probably the best song from that project.

I actually just remembered that Walter himself said on a radio interview in 2013 that they didn't even write "Lead The Way" in 1997 for Butterfly actually. It was written in 1996 and almost forgotten about until Marah decided to use it for the soundtrack of her movie that had been in the works since 1999 already. (Just an FIY for anyone who's a junkie for tidbits on MC's discography, like me. lol)

These were fantastic tidbits. Thanks all for sharing.
Crazy to think how early this song had actually been created - especially since you start seeing the declining strength of her whisper, but the fullness of her belt/upper register.
I love this song to pieces. And now that we have Rarities, I think I would have loved Out Here On My Own to be coupled with this and Never Too Far.

I hope we get all of the tracks from Glitter era at some point. I love her voice that era. I wonder how far along in the process she got with the Prince tracks.

Her last *great* ballad in my opinion. Wish we would have got that infamous run live one time 😭

This and "All My Life" are my favorites on Glitter. Love it. Classic Mariah.

This song is just ridiculous vocally. And yes, that run at the end is otherwordly, but the entire song is a challenge. My only minor complaint is that I wish she had belted a bit more on the bridge instead of doing so much in the airy voice.

This song is great. I did used to prefer “Never To Far” and Reflections over this though. A tidbit about “NTF”, I remember radio programmers thought it was going to bring her back to radio at the time. Saying I prefer those two ballads more isn’t saying much because for awhile “Glitter” was one of my favorite Mariah albums. I really like or love every track from it. A couple of songs I thought could of used some editing, but as a whole I was jamming to the “Glitter” sdtk for awhile.
