Okay, I know it is sooooo uncool, but I went to the Barry Manilow concert last night. My sister got free tickets to her company's loge. Free food and drink... I'm there!
The show was actually really good! Barry sounded great, almost as good as he sounds on the records. His hair was kind of spiked in a Rod Stewart kind of way. He said that this is what Clay Aiken will look like in 30 years. LOL! The place was really packed with all ages of people. He sang all of his hits and had some back-up singer/dancers on the stage with him at times. There were two really cool moments. One was when they projected on the video screens an appearance by Barry on some TV show from long ago. The stage was empty and all dark. In the video he was introduced by a really young Clive Davis and Mac Davis and then it showed a really young cute Barry sitting at his piano and starting to sing Mandy. Then at the second verse the video screens went black and the real Barry emerged through the floor of the stage playing his piano and continued on with the song. Really cool.
Later on while the stage was empty they played a bunch of funny clips of Barry singing "I Can't Smile Without You" with various fans over the years. I guess he pulls a woman out of the crowd at each concert and they do a duet of the song. The fan usually has a terrible voice. LOL! So when they started to play some of that song all of these signs go up in the audience. It was really weird. People standing with their signs trying to get picked by Barry to go up on stage with him. One large sign read "Desperate Housewives love you "Even Now". It was the most amazing sight. I guess these people are regular Barry concert attendees. Well he picked this young woman out and she made her way to the stage. You could tell she was nervous and in awe. Got a big hug from Barry and he asked her if she knew the words to the song. She said "I did before I came on stage" and everyone laughed with her. So they did a duet and she did really good. She was really likeable so everyone was pulling for her to do well. She got a big ovation after the song was over and then a kiss from Barry. Then she went back to her floor seat and got hugs from all her friends that were with her. The spotlight stayed on her and she stood there at her seat and Barry finished up the song. It was the cutest moment. My sister and I sang and danced to a lot of his hits, especially Copacabana and Weekend in New England. Boy, he had hit after hit after hit! What an enjoyable, fun night!
Can anyone provide a ranking of his hit singles? I'm curious as to which ones were his biggest hits. He had so many but don't know where they all charted.
