This was the first single from Collective Soul's second album, simply titled "Collective Soul". As I recall, it did decently on the alternative and rock charts, but it only got to #37 on Pop. I thought this was a shame, as I liked "Gel" almost as much as Collective Soul's huge debut hit "Shine". It spent something like 5 weeks on top of my personal chart at the time.
Overall, I thought this was a great song, and I was disappointed when it was overshadowed by their more downtempo hits off of "Collective Soul", like "December" and "The World I Know". I thought there were some other great songs off of that album that never got released as well, like "She Gathers Rain".

I like "Gel" more than "Shine."
Their latter singles all sound the same tho - "Precious Declaration"... "Why Part 2"...

Love Collective Soul. Hey did you ever notice that the introduction to The World I Know (I think it's that song) is exactly the same as the Goo Goo Dolls Iris. I mean exactly. Check it out. I was stunned!

Excellent song! And it's short, so you don't get sick of hearing it (that's my theory at least). :)

Kinda sad to see a Collective Soul thread under Nostalgia, though.

Gel is a classic. This is the type of music I like hearing from them. It's a shame radio couldn't embrace the harder stuff earlier.

Wow! This was from the Jerkey Boys soundtrack, wasn't it? Great song! Did they break up? No. They had a string of hits through the 90's and plan on releasing a new album this year. Their phenominal guitarist Ross Childress did leave the band, but they have since found a replacement.

I think it was the shortest song title of that year.
