this was a Motown switcheroo. Years ago the label had its biggest stars sing their peers' hits in some weird compilation that was not released form the vaults until recently. I was searching for this album on the net, turns out that its out of print :( I'm listening to clips on Amazon...I really like Stevie Wonder's version of the Supremes' "I Hear a Symphony".
