I was prompted to make this topic after seeing the 80's collection CD on this page that mentioned "Wish I had a Girl"
Henry Lee Summer had 3 songs hit the pop chart
Wish I Had a Girl
Hey Baby
Til Somebody Loves You
His first album was straight ahead rock and roll and worked for me. His second album he produced and I believe it was the third album in which he played all the instruments. An incredibly talented guy that never took off like I hoped he would. His first album was self titled and the second album was titled "I've Got Everything" which contained some good numbers including the title track. Rootsy rock and roll is what I'd call it. He went a little introspective on his third album "Way Past Midnight" and promptly lost his audience. This was a shame because his 4th album "Slamdunk" which generated no hits was probably better than any of the previous three. However his 4th album uncovered even more his limitations as a song writer. Many of his hooks and many of the lyrics certainly sounded as if you had heard them before.
He faded away at that point but put out a Live album set that captured the energy of his shows pretty well. Those that remember him a bit may remember the incredible energy that he put forth when playing live.
In 1998 he put out another album "Smoke and Mirrors" and while there were some good songs on it, he had clearly lost touch with what is "in", which may not be all bad. However his lyrics were not the best and not surprisingly, nothing hit radio from that either. There actually were a couple songs on there I could've seen being radio hits from it, but they never got the chance.
Content to be a local artist in Indianapolis and play retro music with the Alligator Brothers, he mostly plays the bar scene now and will come out from behind the drums to sing "Wish I Had a Girl" or "Hey Baby" occassionally.
In either 2000 or 2001 he put out a CD locally with the Alligator Brothers called "Big Drum".
Yes he's still playing and putting out music. Amazing isn't it?
Anyhow, anyone remember him?
