You know the drill. Everyone in the industry (press, agents, A&R's, etc.) say they will be the next big thing, the new Messiah, the greatest invention since the wheel. And then... what, then? I will start by remembering one of the biggest of them all. Ladies and gentlemen: from the fringes of London's high posh society... the precursors of Peaches Geldof... KULA SHAKER! Now post yours... if you dare to remember any of them!

Most recently I remember: Her single bombed, album still unreleased and nobody cares.

Um... ONE single flopped. And the album is still scheduled for a 2009 release. In this day and age, anything can happen. I think you are being a little bit too precipitous here. ;)

Now THIS is probably one of the biggest examples I can think of.
Saigon, ladies and gentlemen!

Well, I'll throw in what seems to be the classic example. Critics not so much, but label hype galore:

Before anyone starts pointing it out: Kula Shaker's debut album (named K) was released in October 1996 and sold around 1 200 000 worldwide (850 000 of those in the UK, and a further 250 000 in the US) in one year. Add to it three top 5 singles in the UK (and a Top 10 Modern Rock hit in the US), and I'd say not bad at all for a debut! They seemed poised. Thing is, by the time the second album ( Peasants, Pigs And Astronauts) came in Spring of 1999, a combination of misjudged statements, poor career management (they released a #3 single in 1998 during Spring, only for the promised Summer album to not materialize) and the Britpop bubble having already burst meant that it sold a quarter of the debut, while none of the subsequently released singles made any higher than #14. They are, in my book, a flop hype, for the simple fact that everyone in the UK (and the music press in particular) was absolutely convinced that they would be following Oasis as the next big British band and have a long lasting career. Well, turns out they split a few months after the second album was released.

I remember Hoku was kind of hyped a lot several years ago as the hot female singer songwriter and what ever happened to her?

Add When You Believe to that category.

Add When You Believe to that category. #5 peak for Scream #15 peak for When You Believe I'm not really feeling flop as a great tern to use with those.

Considering the fact that it was the pairing of huge superstars like Michael/Janet and Mariah/Whitney, you would of thought those songs would have done better. Those songs fell pretty quickly also. But yeah you are right. They weren't exactly flops, but their performances were definitely underwhelming.

When You Believe was actually a flop in airplay. Without the single release, it stalled at like #50 or thereabout. I was surprised at the time, because of all the hype surrounding the song.

WYB was only Mariah's 2nd single to miss the Hot 100 Top 10 after AYNAF, not counting the "Sweetheart" debacle. It's airplay was abysmal and it only went Top 20 because of brief single sales success. Definitely a flop considering the pairing, hype, poor airplay, and lack of longevity. "Scream" was a disappointment. Even coming off of MJs trial anything other than #1 for a Janet/Michael duet at that time would have failed to live up to expectations, and it did just that. But it still did well enough to stop it from being a true flop, though.

Carmen Electra's album for Prince with Go Go Dancer on it. The Box ran commercials like every 5 minutes hyping what a great talent she was. They allegedly sunk over a million into a promo campaign and I remember reading somewhere the album only sold like ten thousand copies.
