I honestly cannot understand how people STILL say Carrie has no personality after that heartfelt, emotional, quasi bizarre speech for EotY. I mean, she implied she wanted to have sex with Matt Mc.

I thought her line to Matthew showed pretty sharp wit. That was funny.

Exactly. She thinks on her feet when most people probably couldn't.

Matt, most people probably couldn't??? Every woman I know was thinking the exact same thing! My Facebook page has already hosted this discussion...
I'll save my rant about the winners last night because most of the viewers here were pleased. But, I won't be watching anymore if fan votes continue to be a part of the ACM awards. They've lost all credibility.

Haha while I definitely exaggerated that most people probably couldn't, I think it is completely different watching at home when you're not in front of 12+ million people. Props to Carrie.
But I agree; I think the CMA for EotY is worth 100000000000000x more than this fanvoted nonsense. However, it would be interesting if fans' votes only counted like 10%...but regardless I will wait for the CMAs!

All I am going to say is that Entertainer of the Year, should go to the best Entertainer...and while maybe one day it will be true, Carrie does certainly not put on the most entertaining show for those nominated.
Just a reason why fan voting should be reserved for it's own show, except album sales and radio play tell us most of that story anyways.

While literally Entertainer means what you stated, I get the sense, from past winners like Kenny, that its the year's best ambassador for country music. In that sense, I think Carrie is deserving of the win; also, its not like she didnt tour her ass off

I think they should rename the category Female Artist of The Year. I don't necessarily think that it should go to the performer with the best voice, but the one with the most success for the year. If it is voice for sure Carrie would always beat Taylor but if it was based on album sales and radio airplay that may be a different story. The award has always been that way. Why should it be changed just to accommodate Taylor? And even if they do take into account sales and radio airplay, are they supposed to count Taylor's airplay from pop audience too (since this is a country award)? If they don't, then Carrie's airplay is possibly more than hers anyway. Carrie has more No.1's too.

I can agree that Carrie is a great ambassador for Country Music. I think Taylor Swift has also had a wonderful impact on the industry. As a woman, I especially admire the work that they both do. And yes, I tend to group them together. I would also add Kellie Pickler and Julianne Hough to the group.
I simply don't like most of their music. The only Carrie song I've ever liked is "I Told You So". I can't even come up with one for the others. I suppose that tells you what kind of Country Music I prefer.
Leaving personal preferences aside, if we go on the premise that EOTY should be awarded to the person with the most impact on Country Music in the past year, stronger arguments could be made for any of the others both INSIDE and OUTSIDE the industry. Add the ability to "Entertain" at a concert and sing without screeching (sorry, couldn't resist), Carrie Underwood did not deserve this award.
There is simply nothing I can say about Julianne Hough winning "NEW ARTIST"..."Did not deserve" is too mild...
I thought the performances last night were good for an awards show. I would ask that the show leave politics for CNN.

Out of curiousity and putting aside last night's results, does anyone on this board believe that Fan Voting is appropriate for the ACM awards show?

I was floored when the Zac Brown Band didn't win...like Julianne has had one top 20? song with less than stellar album sales...but she has a huge fanbase. I would say that I think Carrie's win is a bit more credible, because while you may not like her "screeching", she had the highest grossing female tour last year, plus 3 #1s, a #1 album, many live performances, etc...
But I also think it would be easy to build a good case for any of the EotY nominees. Keith definitely puts on the best show. I hope Brad can win soon!
To reply to your question, the only instance I think fan voting is even somewhat appropriate would be to select the finalists for "Best New Artist" but then have the industry chose among the male, female, and band.

Oh, I'm not saying that Carrie hasn't put together a very strong career, and she is very engaging. I also think she has a healthy respect for "traditional" country music. I could even agree that she would eventually be a credible winner of this award. She might have won without the fan voting. Unfortunately, there will always be an invisible asterisk for me. It was too early in her career and the field was simply too strong.

Sorry. I hit post before I was ready!
I was so sad when ZBB didn't win. They are incredible and such a breath of fresh air in Country Music. But, I probably could have handled it better if Julianne Hough hadn't been the one to beat them. Have any of her "fans" even heard her sing? I assumed they were mostly fans of her dancing.
I don't think the fan voting would be as tasteless in your proposed format, but wish they would simply leave it to the CMT awards. I watch those awards to be entertained and out of curiousity, but don't think they really impact anyone's career.

did anyone check out the end credits? where they say that the voting process was overseen by some cpa firm and winners were only known during the show, etc etc? it also said there that the winners of eoty and the best new artist awards were determined by a combination of industry and fan votes. to the percentage of each, we might never knw...

well it comes down to the who can vote the fastest/most vs the politics of the academy and neither system is perfect. I do agree that there should be one fan based vote (a fans entertainer of the year) and one for entertainer of the year voted by the academy

It's finally airing where I'm at so you'll get my delayed reaction. Enjoy!
Opening number is awkward.

Ratings Winner !!
Last night’s “Academy of Country Music Awards” on CBS aired more than a month earlier than it did last year, and that led to significant ratings increases among both viewers 18-49 and total viewers, according to Nielsen overnights.
averaged 14.8 million total viewers, up 26 percent from last year’s 11.7 million.
averaged a 3.8 overnight rating among 18-49s, a 31 percent boost over last year’s 2.9.

Keep 'em full-throttle, pedal-to-the-floor going! Also, very few of the performances are up on youtube. I'm especially interested in seeing Lee Ann, Miranda, Sugarland, Lady A, Reba and Jamey. If anyone finds any of those, please post the links. Thank you!

I'll keep modifying my latest post until someone responds. Reba's opening monologue was the best its been in some years. Far improvement over the atrocity two years ago. I liked the little comment about what she has in common with Carrie as well as the Doobie Brothers jokes about Willie Nelson and Michael Phelps. Kenny wasn't so bad. Music seemed loud but he sounded well enough. Sound definitely seemed off with Heidi. Wasn't digging that performance too much....though the literal ring of fire was neat. Jamey Johnson sounds great. Like how they're showing it in black & white.

Please keep your reactions coming, sbp17, and anyone else who wants to weigh in. I'm enjoying the discussion here, too. Trying to cobble together some disjointed (additional) thoughts into something that may resemble a coherent post myself. In the meantime, leilamaurizia, here is a YouTube cap of Miranda's performance -- thanks to kevin59 for the find.

Some of my thoughts I didn't already post about last night. I was at my parents house last night so I was running back and forth to the computer on some commercial breaks.
I thought Jamey did a fantastic job and I was thrilled he won song of the year. By the way, I went 7 for 9 on my own personal predictions of who I thought would win (pats self on the back :) )
Was really happy for Trace to win single of the year. Glad he got some kind of award for a great song. His performance was fabulous. I love his lower register and he was a class act last night. His acceptance speech was brilliant.
Taylor should sing more songs in her lower register. I liked the quiet opening and low range at the piano. Not a bad performance all in all from her.
Carrie did a fantastic job as always on her performance. I just said damn when I saw her dress, although it was vaguely reminiscent of Kelly Clarkson's "My December" cover. I Told You So is probably my favorite single released from Carnival Ride. I never get tired of Carrie singing it. Amazing vocal.
Blake did decent for filling in last minute. Thought he sounded good, although I wasn't a huge fan of that song acoustic. I didn't even know he played the guitar!
I thought the awards were spread out pretty well and I agreed with most all the choices. Would have liked to see Keith win something, but I think his time is coming back around--maybe next year or possibly by the CMAs.
Thought Lee Ann Womack looked awesome. She's aging well and I loved her hairstyle.
Some of the dresses on the red carpet were stunning. I liked the original purplish one Reba had on, Martina looked great in white, Miranda's red dress was pretty, and I loved Hillary Scott's purple dress. Did not like the mermaid dress on Kellie Pickler.
Ok, those are the rest of my disjointed thoughts :)
Forgot about Lady A--they were fantastic as always. I think this group is going to go far. They sing really well in live shows. Love Hillary's new hair cut and color too.

To answer the question, no I do not think fan voting should be part of the ACMs, no matter the category. I mean afterall they are called the ACADEMY of Country Music awards.

i think the reason Taylor got it was because look at her success on the Top 100...her songs are bought alot by fans...shes had huge songs (not even singles) chart high on top 100...which is why Reba said..for bringing a younger audience in..this is true...i agree! and i dont even like her that much...as for who deserves it...umm Carrie deff does as does Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts...these 3 have done the same thing that Taylor has done.....

Loved Strait's Troubadour. That is definitely one of my favorite GS songs.
But then my dear ol' mother called to see if I survived the earthquake so I missed Taylor Swift, Lady A and most of Lee Ann Womack. I was really looking forward to Lady A.

The ACM Awards (as well as the CMAs) are a reflection on the country music industry, not on country music as a whole. That being said, industry awards lose their meaning when the fans are involved. Currently, we have events such as the American Music Awards and the CMT Awards to garner public participation. In my mind, that's enough. The ACMs naturally view record and concert sales when weighing potential winners (see: Taylor Swift's Album win), but I think that artistic qualities should also come into play. (Swift's album is decent, but its moneymaking ways won it the trophy.)
Imagine the Oscars or the Emmys allowing the general public having a vote in the major categories. Yes, these academies all have certain kinks/flaws in their systems, but quality is often king. Many of the greatest TV shows/movies of the last decade were not the most popular in the ratings/box office. Think 30 Rock, The Office, Arrested Development, Slumdog Millionaire, for example. Great art should be rewarded, too, IMHO.
Julianne Hough seems like a sweet girl, but was her impact on country music that much greater than Jamey Johnson, James Otto or the Zac Brown Band this year? Kudos to Hough for having a dedicated fan base (largely in part to her dancing career), but that result appears flawed. The Carrie Underwood/Entertainer vote seems less unsavory. She would've been my second pick behind Brad, but the process still leaves a lot to be desired. Can you imagine middle-aged fans of Alan, George or Reba (perennial nominees) mashing buttons to make sure their favorite won the category? The veterans are at a disadvantage. If Taylor Swift is ever nominated, she's almost a sure shot. I haven't seen much evidence of it, but I'd hate to see Carrie's win tainted by the fact that fans were part of the equation. The whole matter of being able to vote more than once is really goofy, too. Even Idol has limits on that kind of action.
The ACMs have lost their fair share of credibility because they want to engage the youthful fans (or potential fans) of corporate country. Considering the ratings boost, they seem to have achieved their goal. I have plenty of other ideas, but I'm tired for now.

Not sure if this is an appropriate place to ask this, but Blake, Dudley, and anyone else who thinks Brad should win entertainer, can you tell me why? I like Brad a lot but I don't see him as that much of a great "entertainer." Just curious. I will see him later this year, so maybe my opinion will change but he never impressed me much before as that good of a live singer. I do like his songs and think he is a great songwriter, as well as guitar player. When I think of entertainer, I think of Sugarland and Keith Urban as 2 of the very best in the business right now.
Just curious as to your thoughts. Definitely not trying to start any fan wars ;)
Thanks!
