"Even in death, Michael Jackson is still setting records. He has sold 7,676,000 albums so far this year" I wonder when was the last time an artist sold that many albums in one year. Was it Eminem? In 2002/2003 he sold over that.

So Susan probably won't surpass Taylor this week (sales week ending Sunday 27 December?) Is that the last sales week of the year, since there are only four days left in the year and the next reporting week includes a few days of January already?

Is that the last sales week of the year, since there are only four days left in the year and the next reporting week includes a few days of January already? Nope, the following week (ending January 3, 2010) also counts toward 2009, as the bulk of it is in December. As reports are weekly, this week will not be broken up into two parts. So, 2009 is a 53-week sales year.

Hope this is not true... www.examiner.com/x-11363-Dallas-TV-Examiner~y2009m12d28-Susan-Boyle-overtakes-Taylor-SwiftIt only took Susan Boyle slightly more than a month to do what Taylor Swift has been working on for all of 2009: having the year's top-selling album. According to new reports the Scottish singing sensation's debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" is now the best-selling disc of the entire year, beating out Swift's "Fearless" in a competition that was close up until the bitter end. (Final numbers will be released on Thursday's edition of the Billboard 200.) For Susan Boyle, her record sales are a major accomplishment once you consider that at this point last year she was a complete unknown. She skyrocketed to fame thanks to "Britain's Got Talent" and Youtube, and sales of her album have continued to stay strong even in the weeks following its November 24 release. Taylor Swift doesn't have any reason to be upset, either; in between her MTV Video Music Awards controversy with Kanye West and "Saturday Night Live" appearance, she has managed to become more than just a singer in the eyes of many Americans. Are you surprised that Susan Boyle has the best-selling album of the year? Let me know your thoughts with a comment below.

Well at least Tay got the Billboard title. Is Taylor's Fearless the best-selling album released in 2008?
Regardless, as the article said, Taylor has no reason to be upset; her album will end up selling 6-7 million before it's over with domestically. Now we'll get to see how much damage Susan can do post-holiday impact.

Whether she has passed her yet I don't know; if she hasn't she will. BB album of the year is still good for Taylor. It credits her with the sales she put up during her own holiday release last year and the consistency through this year. The BB and calendar end of year sales help provide a complete context for the year's best selling albums. Taylor will be #1 and #2 on both lists. Impressive.

Fearless: #3 Nielsen-Soundscan 2008 #2 Nielsen-Soundscan 2009 #1 in our hearts. ;)
Oh that reminds me: Would it be possible to get an updated list of the best-selling albums released in 2008, based on 08-09 sales?

"Is Taylor's Fearless the best-selling album released in 2008?"
In the US, it's the best-selling album released in the last 4 years, according to the #'s I have.

There is still another week to go however, it is inevitable. I'm not sure it's inevitable that IDAD will be the 2009 top seller. HITS is projecting sales of 510-520K for IDAD and 210-220K for Fearless. HITS has already handed the 2009 crown to Taylor, but I think it's too close to call. If my numbers are correct, the lower of HITS projections would put Fearless's YTD sales at 3144K and IDAD's sales at 2976K. I think it may be tough for IDAD sales to make up the 168K deficit in this post-Xmas week, especially since it's a big week for kids redeeming iTunes gift cards. OTOH, the big-box shelves are loaded with IDAD and there are still lots of folks in the stores this week. In any event, I think it says something wonderful about the diversity of today's music that last year's top seller was Lil Wayne and this year's will be either Swift or Boyle.

Taylor will be remembered as the star of 2009. Gaga and Subo shortly following.

Lady Gaga defines 2009. Like in 05 mariah had more success overall than Kelly, but Kelly defines 2005. Or in 2008, Chris had more success but Rihanna defines 2008.

Lady Gaga defines 2009. Like in 05 mariah had more success overall than Kelly, but Kelly defines 2005. Or in 2008, Chris had more success but Rihanna defines 2008. I think that's all opinion, really. For many people, Lady Gaga probably doesn't define anything and Taylor Swift = life itself, and visa versa. Same goes for 2005. For me, Mariah, Gwen, and BEP defined 2005. I played those three artists all the time and were captivated by how different and fun they were compared to music I had been listening to. Furthermore, I wasn't so bombarded with Kelly's music in 2005 that I felt like she was inescapable, unlike BEP in 2009 where you just couldn't get away from BBP and IGF no matter where you went. If you're talking about impact on the music world, I don't think Kelly in 2005 had any more of an impact than the artists I listed before. As for 2009, it's not even over yet, so we can't really judge what impact who has had on the music world, though Lady Gaga will probably end up having a greater impact on the music world than Taylor Swift, even though I think Taylor's chances for future success are just as good as Gaga's.

For you GaGa may define 2009 but for me the only thing she defines is crap. Lady Gaga defines 2009. Like in 05 mariah had more success overall than Kelly, but Kelly defines 2005. Or in 2008, Chris had more success but Rihanna defines 2008. Again, a matter of opinion. I'm not even sure if I know the Kelly you're talking about and if it's Kelly Clarkson well...I can't even remember if she released anything in 2005 while I do remember every song Mariah released...and I don't like Mariah.

Breakaway was released at the end of '04, with Since U Been Gone peaking in Feb, Behind These Hazel Eyes in the summer and Because Of You in the fall. Her impact year for that album was '05.
But, I am with the Mariah Stanleys on this; MC outsold her disc, her singles and outplayed her on the radio in '05.

Here are the roughly updated totals based on BB's rounded figures of 510k for Susan and 224k for Taylor this week.
1 TAYLOR SWIFT - FEARLESS 3,158,000 2 SUSAN BOYLE - I DREAMED A DREAM 2,974,000
At this point it looks like anyone claiming Susan would easily be #1 for the year will most likely be wrong. Even if both albums have an extremely modest 50% drop next week (I would guess closer to 70% for both), you'd have:
Taylor 3,158,000 + 112,000 = 3,270,000 Susan 2,974,000 + 255,000 = 3,229,000

Updated actual totals:
Taylor 3,157,000 Susan 2,982,000
Projections are 65-75k for Taylor and 150-165k for Susan. Which means Taylor will end up #1 for the year by a 65-80k margin, sales ending up somewhere around:
Taylor 3,212,000-3,222,000 Susan 3,132,000-3,147,000

Holy Crap, Carrie Underwood's 2005 "Some Hearts" is still in the top 200 selling albums of the year....that is remarkable!!! Not only that, it sold 1/4 of a million copies in it's 4th year of release!!!
