I've been wondering, what's the difference in record and song of the year? Record Of The Year is the whole track, it is awarded to everyone involved in making it: the artist, producers, and engineers/mixers. Song Of The Year is the lyrics, it is awarded to just the songwriter(s). It should really be called Lyrics Of The Year but w/e.

do you think the officials might expand the field like the academy awards did, at least in the major categories?

i hope not as it will lessen the honour of being nominated.
the Oscars are only expanding the best picture category for financial purposes (ratings). by expanding they can include more popular films, that have actually been seen by the public.

I really think that Grammy should cut the nominations in like half. 109 categories is RIDICULOUS. Talk about not being honored.

The eligiblity date change frustrates me. Are they gonna push it back for a 13-month-period next year?
I'm hoping Lupe's new single, "Shining Down" steals a nod in Rap/Sung Collabo...I want him to winnnnn...at this point, are there any frontrunners in that category? It's usually an easy winner to predict (Umbrella, Yeah!, Crazy In Love, My Love).

So this topic is pretty much about the main categories... record, song, album, etc.
What latin song/album seems to have a good standing towards being nominated?

Mary isn't coming out until November. Also, SL and IIWAB isn't eligible as they were submitted last year. do we know that as a matter of fact or are we guessing based on unconfirmed "leaked" official documents from last year?

I agree. To me, most of those categories have very little meaning. Of course, those categories would mean something to the artists winning them.

i think they should cut down in the collaboration department. why would they need the whole distiction anyways? plus that way they can keep the categories AND kinda streamline the process at the same time.
make it "best country song", "best rap song", "best rock song" etc. and off you go. we don't need the difference between duo, group and solo artist.

My Best New Artist picks: Keri Hilson Kid Cudi Melanie Fiona David Cook Zac Brown Band I think this might be on the money. Maybe swap-out Laura Izibor for Melanie Fiona and (possibly) Drake for Kid Cudi. But I think the final list will look a lot like this.

Does anyone think that Lucky (Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat) has a chance at getting a best pop collabo nom?

I might be in the minority, but I don't think Drake will get a BNA nomination. He'll probably end up like Leona Lewis --- a lot of hype but no BNA recognition. Laura Izibor is definitely possible.

Song of the Year isn't just the lyrics, it's the melody too. no its just the lyrics. i guess you can say that they do award it for the melody but its just awarded to the songwriters. The melody is really honored in ROTY. Thats where the engineers and mixers of the song are awarded. Those are the people that put together the beats and intrumentals of the song, thus creating the melody thaat was intended by the songwriter. The producers is incharge of everything. The producers work with the engineers and mixers to create the song. The engineers and mixers use the ideas of the producer and basically edit the song to be how the producer intended it to be. The producers is usually the guy that sits by the soundboard and adds beats and what not. The mixers/engineers then take all those beats and such and make the song perfect, still using the original beats that the producer wanted. thats why they started letting the engineers/mixers of the song be honored too because they do ALOT of work on the song to make it go from demo to fully constructed piece of music.

If they cut the Salsa category, the might as well cut the Pop one. But give me a logical explanation for an entire category for Hawaiian music or one of the others that NO ONE pays attention to. And all of the indiviual categories too. They should cut it down to having each of the main popular genres (rock, pop, r&b, rap, country, alternative) with 5 categories in each: Record, Album, Song, Artist and Performance. And then all of the smaller, insignificant categories (Latin, Gospel, Folk, categories that people care about and debate to an extent) having a Best Album and Performance category, while cutting out the categories that no one cares about (Hawaiian, Eskimo, Eurasian contemporary folk, etc.) and molding it into a World Music Album and Performance category much like the Oscar category for foreign film. Keep technical and classical categories. Push up Video and Producer of the Year to be major awards. And then the Grammies would be TRULY prestigious.

Unlike movies where there are only about 720 a year in the US, there are thousands of albums released each year in the US and that doesn't include albums from Europe, South America, Canada, and Asia which are also added into the mix. There are really only 2 types of movies: Drama & Comedy. Drama includes horror, romance, epic & some musicals and comedy includes musicals. There are about 20 different generes of music that also include other types of more specific music. What makes the Grammy's so universally known is the fact that they include over one hundred different categories. Many albums that would go without recognition can now have that recognition from one of the biggest academys in the world.

my early prediction for 'Album Of The Year'
Dave Matthews Band <Big Wiskey And The GrooGrux King> Green Day <21st Century Breakdown> The-Dream <Lovs vs. Money> Bob Dylan <Together Through Life> U2 <No Line On The Horizon> or Bruce Springsteen <Working On A Dream>
other possible entries..
Yeah Yeah Yeahs <It's Blitz> Regina Spektor <Far> Taylor Swift <Fearless>
I think Dave Matthews Band will be biggest winner this time.

As much as I'd love to see The-Dream get AOTY, he stands no chance and I doubt U2, DMB, Bruce will all be in the category. I think Taylor Swift has a shot. Yeah Yeah Yeahs MAYBE most likely DMB and maybe Kanye West

I think this will be DMB's year. I also love U2 but I don't think this album was good enough to win. I think Dave Matthews Band's album is the best of the rock submissions.
Kanye's album was much more artistic this time around, and I personally liked it. Not sure what the grammy voters will do, but I think he has a shot at a nomination anyway.
It is hard to call this year.

I This Kanye will take the Album Grammy too. Grammies like Beyonce so I can see here upsetting people with Halo.
She could dominate a few Categories with Halo, IIWB and Smash in to you all Critics favourites. Taylor deserves a nomination at least, she has grown a bit, I love White horse has to be one underrated song.
