These stations are going to kill this panel if they actually succeed.
This station is a lot worse than the other ones though. It's literally a Rhythmic station being disguised as a CHR...in fact are we sure it's not actually a rhythmic? ???

These stations are going to kill this panel if they actually succeed. Yeah agreed...not understanding why they're allowed to report to CHR -

I always get excited when a new pop station opens because I am like YAY maybe it will be a good station! Then I see the playlists and they are always RHY same old same old playing the same shit 100s of times a week. Disappointing.

I guess the good news is that some major cities are returning to radio's roots having more than just one "pop" station. You know when I was growing up there were tons of "pop" stations within the most cities' limits. It's about time that they started this competition thing, I have not seen this happen in over 20 years.
Somebody needs to start the "trend" of playing more variety or else CHR/Pop is going to loose in ratings continually, no matter how many CHR there are in this country.

I guess the good news is that some major cities are returning to radio's roots having more than just one "pop" station. They're not really pop stations though IMO if they won't touch a song just cause it has a guitar or piano in it...or at least can't see why they'd be considered CHR - many cities (Detroit, Baltimore, Salt Lake, Cincinatti) have Hot ACs that have playlists closer to the CHR chart than these now stations

Okay, this station doesn't even seem to be remotely following the CHR chart...it is a downright rhythmic station, at least the other two had some CHR-leaning elements, this is just a complete and total rhythmic. Look at this yes page: www.yes.com/#KFRHIt's a joke that this station is being called a CHR. They're barely even playing Britney nevermind pop/rock...

^Yeah when the Rhythmic format was created it would have had no prob. playin Britney, GaGa, and Fergie...not sure why it'd be such a prob. now - it's like Rhythmic has almost become Urban, so stations playin straight "rhythmic" songs (i. e. all songs with beats to them) are callin themselves CHR

You guys it's the Great Shift... Hot AC is the new pop, pop is the new rhythmic, and rhythmic is the new urban! duh.

I don't think 102.7 Now will be on the Pop panel. It sounds like other Beasley Rhythmics, like Wired 96.5 in Philly, which is on the Rhythmic panel.

They've got Mike Jones' "Next To You" at #23 on their top songs, so they can report to whatever panel they want.

This station also has Jason Mraz, Daughtry ("What About Now", which is true Hot AC), Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Pink, David Cook, and the Fray in their top 40. So I might actually have to stand up for the station and argue it has just enough pop to qualify for inclusion on this panel.

In a city with two solidly-entrenched rhythmic stations such as KLUC & KVEG, launching a top 40 station here or just about almost anywhere, given the stranglehold which rhythmic music has had at the format for large portions of the past 20+ years (and unquestionably the past 6-7) makes no sense.
KZQZ/SF made zero progress against similarly entrenched KMEL and KYLD a decade ago, and it's not going to work here either.
Look at the 'MOVIN' format--the one in SF is now a top 40 station, and the one here in LA will be toast on April 15th, and Rick Dees will be unemployed, although he'll continue to be paid by Emmis; that overresearched format with its burnt-to-a-crisp library has flourished very well in exactly one market.
These radio honchos and consultants must realize that the days of CHR/Pop stations getting huge ratings in large or major markets are long gone, except for a handful of prestigious format behemoths such as WNCI (9.3!!!!!!!), WZEE & WDCG, and a handful of others.
That will continue to be the case as long as top 40 stations continue to share tons of music with their crosstown rhythmic competitors.

Well this station used to be an AC station so if you look at their Yes playlist, you'll see a bunch of songs they played when they were an AC station...but if you actually look at the songs they've played since they switched, all of that is left out and it's strictly rhythmic stuff.

Yeah some of those stations like WDCG have completely lucked out cause they have absolutely no competition (i. e. G105 is literally the only station in Raleigh playin contemporary music, so IMO listeners there really don't even have a choice lol) Also thought Z100 and Kiss Dallas were at/near the top of their markets (unless they've come down recently) Thinkin that lots of medium-sized CHRs are doin really well cause they don't have Hot AC competitors (or their HACs are really conservative) - think some examples are WPRO/Providence, WSTW/Wilmington, WKZL/Greensboro, WKRZ/Wilkes-Barre, and WXLK/Roanoke Def. know what you mean about Rhythmics cutting CHR ratings though cause I lived in Charlotte when Kiss 95.1 was at the top of the market, and then was literally cut in half when Clear Channel launched a new Rhythmic there...

^^ I love WPRO. I think it gets the ratings it does because it's actually a good, balanced station. I live just outside of Boston and WPRO comes in over here. Here in Mass., it's in direct competition with MIX 98.5 and KISS 108. Yet, I still tune into WPRO more than them because they have the perfect mix of recurrent and new stuff for me anyway.

i grew up listening to WPRO FM Providence (92 pro fm)...they never really wavered from the chr pop format in its 30+ years of existence with the exception of the handful of rhythmic songs they throw in now...Radio here in Southen New England has changed dramatically in the past 20 years but Pro FM is still here and not going anywhere... Kiss 108 Bostonbecame more of a CHR pop station within the past 10 years...It was always chr rhythmic/dance back in the day and WJMN then WZOU Z 94 was in direct competition with them...then clear channel came alongand scooped up both station and here we are

Yeah really think WPRO is a good example of a balanced CHR station that always gets high ratings cause it doesn't really have much in the way of competition (in the Providence market)...WSNE is technically HAC but it's really lite (almost like an AC), and the Rhythmic station there (Kix 106 I think) never really had ratings that were that high

Well actually KIX 106 is now WWKX Hot 106 for awhile now, which is owned by Citadel which owns WPRO....i think most markets are like that nowadays where the CHR's and the urbans are not competing being run by the same company....when it comes to CHR Rhythmic i prefer by far WFHN Fun 107 which is run by citadel as well...awesome CHR pop/dance station...what station nowaday would play pink who knew followed by lisa lisa let the beat hit em

What KPWR did to KIIS in 1986 by going from non-existent to #1 in less than a full year stunned the entire industry, and definitely served as the playbook on 'how to dethrone a CHR/Pop powerhouse'.
The exact same thing happened in Indianapolis (Hoosier 96--WHHH---blew such a large hole in WZPL that the latter became a Hot AC station), and especially in San Antonio, where KBBT demolished KTFM almost as quickly as KPWR belted KIIS.
KTFM & WZPL had both been perennial double-digit share stations for years, and KTFM had been #1 in San Antonio for ages.
PRO-FM has been a very well respected CHR/Pop behemoth for well over thirty years, and would certainly merit consideration as one of the top five Northeast CHRs of the past 25 years alongside format godzillas such as WHTZ & WXKS.
