This past weekend, Casey played the song "Hold Me" by Fleetwood Mac as a dedication from a woman to a guy she was reunited with at her 20 year class reunion. The song was one from their graduation year (1982).
I found myself wondering if this dedication would have seen the light of day at all if Casey were still hosting AT40. Let me clarify...
It's common knowledge now that the dedication songs are often changed when they don't fit a given format, and I'd say it's highly unlikely that AT40 would have played a 20+ year old Fleetwood Mac song. However, there's no way (without rewriting the letter) that Casey's staff could have simply replaced the song with something CHR-friendly.
So what do you think? If this letter had come along six months ago, would it still have been read on the air? If so, what would they have done for AT40?

They probably would have emailed her and asked her if there were any other songs at the reunion that she enjoyed. But yeah, it's doubtful that there are any 20-year old songs that CHR is still playing.

They probably would have played "Hold Me". This past fall, there was a dedication request for "Man In The Mirror" by Michael Jackson and that song was played on all three versions of the show, because that song was mentioned in the dedication. Or maybe they would have played something that would be more CHR friendly, such as Jack & Diane by John Cougar, or maybe his other big 1982 hit "Hurts So Good". Or possibly "Eye Of The Tiger". I'm not sure and we'll probably never really know.

"I Love Rock 'N' Roll" by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts would be another option, the song is still familiar to today's CHR audience (thanks in part to Britney's awful remake).

Bumping this up after hearing the original "American Pie" played on AT20 this weekend in another case where a substitute song would have been impossible given the content of the dedication. I know Casey once substituted Madonna's version on AT40, but it wouldn't have made sense in this case.
This further supports my theory that Casey and his staff have become a lot more open-minded about dedication songs since his departure from AT40.

And don't forget Josh Groban. How often do you hear his music played on Hot AC?

Exactly! After seeing that his song was played on AT20, it makes me think more and more that they're going to stop the practice of switching songs. Either that, or they'll switch songs only when it's extremely necessary.

It seems to me that, since AT10 has come along, that they only do a switch when the requested song is not AC friendly.
