These anticipated first singles all crashed the chart within a few weeks of each other. I think it's a foregone conclusion that "Know Your Enemy" will hit #1, 311 will hit the top 3 and might sneak in a couple weeks after Green Day, and Incubus will notch a respectable top 5 peak... but which one's your favorite?

Hmm...too early to tell, but definitely between "Black Heart Inertia" and "Know Your Enemy."

"Black Heart Inertia" > "Hey You" > "Know Your Enemy"
Obviously subject to change in the near future.

Know Your Enemy > Funny The Way It Is > Hey You > Black Heart Inertia Yeah I felt the need to include the new DMB one

Yeah, I think the new DMB should be in this poll too. I don't have my ranking formulated yet, but I know I like Hey You the best of the three above to vote. I like the new DMB one about the same as that though. As for Green Day/Incubus's new singles, I'm not sure yet whether I'm disappointed in "Black Heart Inertia" to like it less than the new Green Day, cuz I still haven't heard the entire song, but I'm not typically a huge Green Day fan.

This is tough... I think all of these songs are decent, but nowhere near each band's respective best material. For now I'd say that "Black Heart Inertia" narrowly edges out the other two, but that may be because it's had more time to grow on me.

There's also the Rancid track that I didn't include. That was because I was going for the 3 tracks that had huge debuts; Incubus wasn't quite as big as 311 or GD's, but I thought the division was apparent enough between them and Rancid that I could draw the line there. I didn't include the DMB track because I didn't even know it was charting until today (and after I made this poll).

None of these three impress me; standard fare from each artist. That being said, I also expect all three to fill the top 5 very soon. It'll take either something special by someone else or August for another band to have a chance. Might see something new from Linkin Park, No Doubt, and Muse soon...

Not from LP, Chester's probably putting out his solo album first.

pen, fmqb website, www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16770 (Is this a good source?), says that all three are TBD for 2008-9; that's where I got this from. Have you heard something else regarding Chester? Thanks

Thanks Well Linkin Park is working on a new album, that much is true. What FMQB tends to do is usually when high-profile releases get talked about, they're added to the list, but those bands are not necessarily going to get their albums out this year. More often than not, some of those get pushed to next. But in February, Mike said that Chester's solo album will be out maybe round September and that he's working on both that and LP at the same time. And that the new LP should drop early next year, which is a much more realistic timeframe.

"Funny The Way It Is" is my favorite of the new lead singles. I happen to think it's the best the Dave Matthews Band has released since "Grace Is Gone".
"Black Heart Inertia" is decent, but it doesn't sound like a chart-topper either. "Know Your Enemy" is basically what many were expecting to hear from Green Day so I can't consider it either a stellar or bad song, and "Hey You" sounds like a basic consolidation of 311's musical maturity since their more earlier, rap-funk-rock days which have since evolved to a more relaxing, reggae and folk-leaning direction.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
