This was inspired by hearing "Hot and Cold" by Katy Perry on my AC station and by the "Umbrella" thread. Now, if you hear a song that sounds out of place on AC, put it here.

WYJB (B 95.5) Albany, NY does a "70's and 80's Lunchbox" every weekday from 12-1, where they play songs from those 2 decades they don't typically play any other time of the day. One time, they played "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang. I commented to my co-worker, "This is my favorite Soft Rock song of all time!"

My AC station's "Saturday Night Dance Party" was mixing their typical AC fare with songs like Usher's "Yeah!", complete with Ludacris' verse. It was a trainwreck, and I guess the listeners agreed because they're back to their normal format on Saturday nights now.

I remember one time during the overnight hours a few years back where my market's AC station played live club music overnights (which I would expect more from Hot AC or Top 40 stations).
A cousin of mine told me she also heard a song by 50 Cent (perhaps "In Da Club") being played on that very same station -at night of course, but still...how's that for easy listening!

Not to mention Pink's Get This Party Started. ![:-x](http://images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif) I hate that song but I've heard it plenty on AC. The way WLTW says their call letters and frequency sounds more like what I'd expect from a CHR-Pop station than an AC station.

Hmmm Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns 'N' Roses def. isn't "soft rock" lol (heard it this mornin)...AC stations like this seriously need to change their slogan from "soft rock" to "familiar rock" IMO

One of my AC stations here (Fresh 102.7) plays a LOT of songs an AC usually wouldn't - I've heard Umbrella and Hot n Cold on there countless times, as well as Don't Stop the Music and Jumpin Jumpin by Destiny's Child lol.

Yeah don't think any of those Fresh AC stations report to Mediabase (looked it up and they don't report to BDS) cause they're basically a different format (CHR with really low spin rotations)

It's my theory that 20 years from now, songs like "Lollipop" and "In Da Club" will receive regular AC play (or at the very least, Hot AC), simply because if current stations market themselves as playing stuff from the 70s and 80s, as current pop listeners get older, a shift will naturally occur.

AC playing Hips Don't Lie has always made me wonder?
What gets on my nerves is how a song such as Seal's IYDKMBY is being played on 89 stations and has an audience of 12.1 meanwhile Pinks Sober is being played on only 12 stations and has an audience of 11.8. That senario is similiar with many songs having huge aud. but only being played by by a few stations. Its like those few 12 stations, which don't play what one normally thinks of as AC music are setting the standard for AC. Hot N Cold, Second Chance seems more like HOT AC to me. I feel like theres a few stations that need to be removed from the panel. Stations that haven't touched any of the new AC stuff by Seal, Jim Brickman, James Taylor(he is kind of old school), Missy Higgins etc, but are playing typically HOT AC sounding songs like Hot N Cold, or even stuff by Usher etc.
Kind of reminds me of that article where John Mellencamp said BDS has ruined how artists can grow from the ground up. Now it's a few stations that set the standard.

Over the last 2-3 years, it seems like the majority of the panel has been spinning more and more songs that we never would've thought of as "AC songs" earlier in the decade though. As "Unwritten" headed toward the top 10, I remember being shocked that such a song would be taking off like that on AC. Today it wouldn't surprise me at all.

This was around 1990, and this station actually played "Patience" by Guns 'N' Roses! And they played it during the day, and the host actually read the name of the song and artist on the air! I guess this station was a little "ahead of its time" as it flipped to a Hot AC format not too long after. ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0270.gif)

Yeah, I periodically check their playlist. I really believe they should be reclassified as a Hot AC station. I also think Fresh 105.9 in Chicago may be headed in the same direction as they now play the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga in the evenings. Going after our "Lite" station only briefly helped their ratings, but now they may trying to go after our Hot AC station WTMX which just broke into the top 5.

That may be because they are still less than two years old, but they should really both be classified as Hot AC stations, especially the New York station. CHR, nope. Each station's most active currents do not garner enough spins to warrant that, and both are heavily recurrent and gold intensive. Therefore a change to the Hot AC panel would be the best way to go for both stations.

^Yeah those "Fresh" stations were both started up to compete with Hot ACs (WPLJ and WTMX), so not sure why Arbitron put them in as AC stations

Our Fresh station is always going after WLIT with liners saying how they play songs that are too old. So I think their original intent was to go after AC stations. However, both the New York and Chicago Fresh stations may now have expanded their attack to include Hot AC stations by programming more Hot AC leaning playlists. We'll see if this helps them in the ratings.

Yeah, Fresh 102.7 New York does the same thing with WLTW, and I remember their TV commercials they had when they first started attacked the "old Lite station". Either way their playlist is definitely more Hot AC than AC.

Fresh 105.9 sounds way more hot AC than AC. BTW, they need better audio processing. Some of their songs sound as if they were recorded in mono.

Second Chance by Shinedown has 72 plays on AC - just wondering if there are a couple "misplaced" stations I'm sure there are. There is one in Fresno that reports as an AC that has a completely Hot AC playlist. Also Fresh 102.7 in New York is definately Hot AC leaning as well. Btw, congratulations atlantaboy on your Braves for beating the Cubs tonight after the Cubs choked away a big lead late. Unbelievable!

I can't believe the Cubs choked like that! Anyhow, "Second Chance", to me, isn't much of a reach on AC. In fact, I'd been hoping that AC would start playing it any day now.
