GaGa was the only big diva who actually performed a current single and the payoff is pretty clear. Pink and Beyonce missed a great opportunity.

not having brit there and ratings are up , hope they keep the trend of having real performers in the next decade By that logic, MTV should forget ever inviting Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Rihanna and others back since they've all performed on shows that had lower ratings than this year's. Some of you people are insane, literally. You'll grasp at any reason to hate on Britney, no matter how ludicrous it may be. She wasn't even AT the VMAs, and people are still finding excuses to bash her. Sad. Really, really sad.

Performing SL made sense because it was nominated, but clearly there was no reason to perform Sober. It was a great performance, my second favorite one behind GaGa's, but it was still a missed opportunity to give Funhouse a bump.

All you need is extreme hype rather. This year was MJ tribute/Gaga vs. Beyonce.

I'm posting an article which I found very interesting. Everybody should read it! nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/09/kanye_was_right.html?f=most-commented-vulture-7d5 Kanye Was Right 9/14/09 at 12:45 PM Comment 89Comment 89Comments Photo: Getty Images Is Kanye a dick? Yes, of course, everyone knows Kanye is a dick. Was he drunk last night? His haircut certainly seemed to indicate as much. Do we condone anyone leaping onstage and snatching microphones away from critically acclaimed former girlfriends of Jonas brothers? We do not. But can anyone deny today that Kanye was completely correct, that Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" clip, a certified pop phenomenon, very obviously did deserve to win the award for Best Female Video last night? (For your reference, here is a link to thousands of YouTube playlists featuring regular people dancing to "Single Ladies" in their living rooms, and here is Taylor Swift's nothing-special winning video.) Even if the VMAs never were, awards are supposed to be merit-based, right? And the fact that "Single Ladies" eventually won the trophy for Video of the Year makes its loss for Best Female Video logically vexing, does it not? Sure, Kanye's inability (or refusal) to recognize the meaningless of MTV's awards shows makes him seem humorless — but it's also admirable, in a way. Why shouldn't we demand that awards go to the most deserving artists? Did you hear the way his voice went up when he said, "...of ALL TIME!"? This is a guy completely serious about art! And is that really such a bad thing? In a year in which music culture is dominated by Michael Jackson and the Beatles, does his mission to acknowledge the greatness of contemporary musicians (like Beyoncé, who actually did make one of the greatest music videos of ALL TIME) not amount to a worthy cause? (Plus, he saved everybody from having to talk about Lady Gaga today.) As we said, we don't condone his methods, and we agree that it would (mostly) be a bad thing if everyone making acceptance speeches always had to worry about being hilariously accosted by Kanye West — but it's hard not to appreciate his idealism. Also, considering that his interruption will probably be as good for Swift's career as it will eventually be for his (now he gets to make an album about how hated he is!), it's difficult not to find the backlash totally overblown. The only thing we're upset about today is that Kanye couldn't be there yesterday afternoon when Justin Timberlake won an Emmy. People wanna get their panties in a bunch and get all defensive without being rational about it. The ratings were up because they had a lineup of proven and credible live acts instead a trainwrecl has been that can't do anything visually pleasing on stage without an insanely busy circus of action swirling around her. This was a great year for the viewers and I hope MTV learned a lesson.

No one said "without Britney Spears the VMAs gets low ratings." Cut the crap.
However, if MTV confirmed that Britney was going to perform, the ratings would have been way, way higher. Why? Because everybody was waiting for Britney's performance this year, to re-cover her infamous 2007 performance.

Maybe no one said in this thread, but I've seen a lot of Britney's fans saying that.
And anyways, after last year I don't think Britney would have made a HUGE difference. Last year was basically just Britney, so a lot of people would have been tired of the same thing all over again. Of course it would have been great to have her over there getting her moonman, a lot of people was expecting her to be there.

Because everybody was waiting for Britney's performance this year, to re-cover her infamous 2007 performance. No. I don't get why fans of any artist still latch onto the argument that one artist can make a huge massive difference in ratings. Even AFTER it being proven over and over and over again that they never do. Like, years Britney showed up and performed seeing really low ratings and years Britney didn't perform or show up seeing higher ratings. Britney obviously garners interest and will help a line-up-but NOT make or break it. Honestly, I have seen ratings affected more by the day they air and what they happen to be going against in the same time slot. I just don't get the whole "one artist will make roaring millions more watch a show" or "one artist not being there will condemn a show to no one watchinG!!!!!!" statements when factual evidence pretty much proves otherwise every single time. It isn't just Britney fans-pretty much every artist who has ever been an It Girl or an attention getter has her fans declaring that like it is the gospel truth. Just seems so irrational to me coming from normally rational people or otherwise straightforward folks. MTV did well this year because it catered to every crowd successfully-it was the sum of all the parts and not one individual. They had veterans, newbies, and artists from every genre performing. Very effective and I hope they do take notes rather than taking the advice of fans here and focusing all efforts on catering to one artist OR one genre-proven not to be the best tactic for getting the highest ratings. A strong, varied line-up with a few from every genre/type (shocking artists like Britney or Gaga, solid veterans like Beyonce, up and comers/people who appeal to teens like Taylor) seems to work the best and make for the most balanced, appealing show.

Here's my final word on Kanye-gate. US magazine's article on what went down behind-the-scenes : What stood out to me after reading this article : 1) The reason the normally quick witted Taylor was speechless right after Kanye's outburst was because she THOUGHT the audience was booing her. 2) Beyonce is a class act. Kanye is a bigger douche than I thought. 3) Eminem wanted to give up his spot for Taylor to re-do her acceptance speech!! I've never had any beef with Eminem but I think I LOVE him now.... 4)This puts to rest speculation that YBWM was pre-taped--only the subway segment was.I'm really impressed how Taylor managed to pull herself together at 10 minutes notice to perform LIVE. 5)From the article : " Taylor is not someone who enjoys being the victim...She just wants to get on with work and for this to be over."
I'm glad she isn't playing the victim card and milking this incident for sympathy and publicity.

The ratings were up because they had a lineup of proven and credible live acts instead a trainwrecl has been that can't do anything visually pleasing on stage without an insanely busy circus of action swirling around her. This was a great year for the viewers and I hope MTV learned a lesson. The VMAs of 2006 had the worst ratings and Britney wasn't even there. So who are you gonna blame for the horrible ratings of 2006? Beyonce, Justin, Christina, Shakira...? They were the ones who where there that year. For those who don't know about the VMAs 2006 ratings:The VMAs hit a ratings slump in 2006, when the telecast attracted fewer than six million viewers. Since then, the awards show has been slowly growing its viewership, though it still has a ways to go if it hopes to reach the 12 million viewers it would routinely attract in its heyday. www.broadcastingcable.com/article/353829-Cable_Ratings_MTV_VMAs_Improve_Over_2008.phpThe VMAs of 2008 had a a 15% boost from VMAs 2007 and a 41% jump from the 2006 awardscast headlined by Jack Black. (which means that the VMAs ratings of 2006 were worst than 2007).

Unlike past years, too, the VMAs are airing on more than jut MTV. I think the 2003 VMAs averaged 10.7m viewers, or something like that.
To sum it up: This year's averaged 11 million- 8.97m for MTV, 1.3m from VH1 and .749 on MTV2. The 11m was the largest audience for the VMAs since 2002, and MTV's 8.97m was the highest since 2004.

Sober was the perfect choice for Pink. It was a glimpse of what to expect on her tour.
