Move this topic if need be, but I figured this would be seen by the most relevant people if I posted it in here.
So in the latest Rolling Stone I polished off last night (I'm perpetually 2 issues behind), dated April 30, this song was listed on the back page as the #3 downloaded song from Rhapsody, behind Lady Gaga's two huge hits and preceding 7 other current songs.
WTF. ???
I didn't have any luck searching to see if this was recently featured prominently in some TV show or anything. Anybody know anything about this?
I don't get it.

Maybe it was their free download of the day at some point or something. That's the only thing I can think of.

Their current top 10:
1. Boom Boom Pow Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow 2. Poker Face Lady GaGa The Fame 3. Grux Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King 4. Shake Me Like A Monkey Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King 5. Funny the Way It Is Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King 6. Use Somebody Kings Of Leon Only By The Night 7. Lying In the Hands of God Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King 8. Why I Am Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King 9. Just Dance featuring Colby O'Donis Lady GaGa The Fame 10. LoveGame Lady GaGa The Fame
Yeah, that's four artists making up the top ten. I don't know, this seems kinda odd to me. I know DMB is an established group, but I wouldn't expect them to have half of the top 10, including 2 album tracks in the top 5 ahead of their lead single.
No idea about SW though, sorry.

Well that's not a mystery. Rhapsody is obviously going by downloads when they make up their top ten and if you notice, those DMB tracks are in the exact track order they appear on the album. Obviously they're all up there cause people are buying the album.

But that's the TOP 10, there's no way that EVERYBODY that bought "Funny" bought the whole album. It seems like their top songs have a promotional tie-in. Compare this to itunes' top 10.
1. Boom Boom Pow Black Eyed Peas 2. Fire Burning Sean Kingston 3. LoveGame Lady GaGa 4. I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) [More English Extended Mix] Pitbull 5. Second Chance Shinedown 6. Waking Up In Vegas Katy Perry 7. Knock You Down Keri Hilson, Kanye West & Ne-Yo 8. Poker Face Lady GaGa 9. Goodbye Kristinia DeBarge 10. Out Last Night Kenny Chesney
All singles, and all current hits.

But what kind of a top 10 is it? From when to when? I think that's the important bit. And actually, I wouldn't really be surprised if most Dave Matthews Band listeners did buy the whole album. They have a very devoted fanbase. I just don't think it's that big a mystery.

It's a weekly top 10.
I'm a casual fan, I bought "Funny" from itunes (since I've heard it before) and nothing more. One would think that the single would be outselling two album tracks.
I also don't see how any DMB track, in this day and age, could outsell a pair of Gaga hits. Not to mention the oddly placed "Use Somebody."

Well here's another stat to throw into the mix. How many people use fuckin Rhapsody, anyway?

No clue actually, I know you can listen to full songs if you have an account, which I don't. Although it came with my computer, I've just never cared enough to register. Although, I'm very tempted to register just so I can buy Decyfer Down's Crash with the Rhapsody exclusive acoustic version of "Best I Can."

Well here's another stat to throw into the mix. How many people use f**kin Rhapsody, anyway? Not many. And perhaps more importantly, most people who use Rhapsody have a monthly subscription to it- 12.99 a month for unlimited downloads (that expire if you stop paying obviously) and streaming tracks. I'm guessing their download chart includes not just MP3 downloads, but downloaded subscription tracks and streaming tracks. That means it's going to have a totally different character compared to iTunes. If you're considering buying the DMB album, you're probably going to listen to the first few tracks before making your decision. A lot of people probably started listening out of curiosity and a few of them stopped after one track, a few more stopped after two tracks, a few more stopped after three tracks, etc.
