I'm not sure what you guys are hearing, but it's well under five minutes on both stations I listen to. I had never heard of any seven minute song yet.

Then obviously it was edited for radio.

Obviously, meaning song length is not much of an issue for its mediocre recent performance. Although the first time Altnation played it, it seemed to last forever. Maybe that was the long version. But essentially it just does not feel like an Alice In Chains song in much of any way. Maybe some future singles will bring back the sound.

This has become the official first single; it goes for adds September 1, per All Access.

Finally heard this last night. It seemed like it was nearly 10 minutes long? Sometimes, when you listen to a song, there's like, this thing that shows you how long the song is. I know, it's crazy, but like, this is something that has been happening for like, a long time. It's called a songs "length" or run-time...I know unoriginal right? Thank you class, now I believe the song is a little over 7 minutes, but since when has a songs length really even mattered? Just ask Dream Theater. I heard this now, and my thoughts: yeah, Dream Theater (and Tool, and Metallica) can have 7-minute songs - because they mix it up and keep things interesting. This is 7 minutes of straight sludge, which is way too damn long.

And as for Dream Theater these days, their songs no longer merit their lengths. They like The Mars Volta write 16 minute masturbation epics most of the time. That said, when Dream Theater and The Mars Volta hit their gold mine ideas, they're among the best songs ever recorded.

I wonder if anyone's actually tried to masturbate to an epic-length Dream Theater or Mars Volta song. My guess is Mars Volta is more likely.

I just heard this on the radio... I literally wanted to kill myself. This is one of the most dark, depressing and soul-crushing songs I've ever heard.

I have to admit that I've never liked Dream Theater. Even their Images and Words era stuff is kind of cheesy sounding for my tastes. I like prog that's neither cheesy or self-indulgent.

Is that because of the higer possibility for psychedelic drug use during the latter? I just heard this on the radio... I literally wanted to kill myself. De-Loused and Frances are still among my favorite albums ever. Amputechture and Bedlam kind of blow though. Still not sure about Octahedron.

I thought you and Amputechture had a moment recently when you kinda liked each other.

I'm still not sure. It's definitely no Frances though.

12 21 ALICE IN CHAINS A Looking In View Virgin/Capitol 2009 569 899 -330
This is going to be an interesting Active chart run. #12 peak and... maybe only 9-10 weeks on the chart? Rowellfarm490, do you happen to have the stats on it?

Other songs that I remember having a rapid ascent and descent akin to this on either alternative or active that might be worth looking into are:
Smashing Pumpkins - "The Everlasting Gaze"
Disturbed - "Guarded" (though it may have hung on in the lower part of the chart while "Stricken" flew up the charts.
Pearl Jam - "Brother"
Alice In Chains - "Get Born Again"
Filter - "Where Do We Go From Here" (I remember this song peaking quickly and then grossly underperforming if I remember correctly; I still feel that this song should have been every bit as big as "Take A Picture" and "Hey Man, Nice Shot" at Alt/Rock radio.)
Coldplay - "Violet Hill" on alternative - though I remember it taking a long time to completely drop off the chart. Then again, "A Looking In View" may stall in the lower half of the chart after plummeting.
Stone Temple Pilots - "Down" (maybe on Alternative it fell fast anyway?)
Filter - "Welcome To The Fold"
Chris Cornell - "Can't Change Me"
Our Lady Peace - "One Man Army"
311 - "Hey You"
Strait up f/ Lajon Witherspoon, Clint Lowery, and Morgan Rose of Sevendust - "Angel's Son"
Nine Inch Nails - "We're In This Together"

We're forgetting the most obvious one:
U2 - "Get On Your Boots".

Also G.L.O.W. by the Smashing Pumpkins, and Magnificent by U2.

Disturbed - "Guarded" (though it may have hung on in the lower part of the chart while "Stricken" flew up the charts.) Yeah, "Guarded" was the one I thought of first as the closest fit - because they were both "heater" tracks that Active ate up anyway.
