I wouldnt call them the biggest modern band in history just because they have the most #1s
U2, Green Day, and eventually Linkin Park are/will all be bigger

Most of the TBA threads aren't really months in advance (or at least I don't make mine months in advance [or at least I don't intend them to be]).

I only made one for Weezer, because a press release said their album is coming out in October.
But seriously, Artie? They're about to start recording. Hell, it took Guns 'N' Roses 14 years to record. Even U2 took 5. I don't intend to discuss past Red Hot Chili Peppers songs for multiple years.
So much for Chickenfoot.

If I'm remembering right, the last five lead singles were produced by Rick Rubin. Dani California / Scar Tissue / By The Way / Give It Away and whatever lead the One Hot Minute disc, right? And the four I've mentioned have nothing that distinguishes it from any of the others.
I am very much hoping for a track that breaks the mold of their radio hits. But whatever track we here released from this new CD early next year will be huge I am sure.

I'd say they're the biggest modern rock band in history. And beyond that, they're the most well-liked. So few people dislike them, it's amazing.

Depends what you are looking at I guess. I'd say U2 has a lock on that crown as much for world wide success and fandom than RHCP could ever hope for. Not too say they aren't huge but I would put my money on U2's overall legacy and fans to be much larger than the Peppers.

In modern American terms, I would have thought REM had the most commercial success.

Well R.E.M. really fell off in the 2000s. While RHCP had a grand resurgence.

R.E.M. had some big hits in the early days. Losing My Religion will always be their best for me. surprisingly agreed with you

I'm not sure resurgence is the right word since they never went away. But yeah R.E.M. has done nothing lately to keep up with them in chart points.

So few people dislike them, it's amazing. They may not dislike the band, but there are a lot of people, myself included, who can't stand "Give It Away".

For some odd reason, I like every single the Chili Peppers have ever put out, but when it comes to their albums, overall I can never really appreciate them too much.

XM reported this afternoon that John Frusciante has departed from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Not a terrible thing in my opinion, their music has started to parody itself. At least in their single selections.

I dunno why so many people hate One Hot Minute. Even the band hates it. I liked it.

It was fine. I assumed he meant Freaky Styley. That was a pretty unflattering record.

I dunno why so many people hate One Hot Minute. Even the band hates it. I liked it. Probably because it was not even close to as good as Blood Sugar Sex Magic, which put them on the BIG map. Plus back then, Navarro had a reputation of a being a bit of a douchebag, at least that's what got portrayed by the media. Even though, he's always seemed pretty down to earth and intelligent in most interviews I've seen. I think they just had magic with Frusciante who the band admittedly has said felt the most like Hillel in terms of making the band feel whole.

I don't know about magic. Frusciante seemed to make many of their songs sound too similar.

Honestly, I've enjoyed and noticed Frusciante role in the songs' more than Flea and Smith. Who is the first person playing in Under The Bridge? Who's awesome riff hooks people into "Can't Stop" in the beginning? Who drives the first thirty seconds of "Tell Me Baby" and who's solos close "Dani California" and "Scar Tissue?"
Without Frusciante, I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers become merely Warm Brown Chili. If that's what Artie likes, then good for him.

Without Frusciante, I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers become merely Warm Brown Chili. If that's what Artie likes, then good for him. Kiedis may be the voice of the band, and Flea the metronome, but I too believe Frusciante made the band appear, and feel, full-blooded. It is clear Frusciante is key to the band's melodic palette, and he also has a way of channeling emotion better into music than almost any other current accomplished guitarist. It is for that reason why "One Hot Minute" is a less-regarded moment in their catalog.............it has its moments surely (particularly "Pea" and the single "My Friends") but as a whole, does much really stand out to the listener emotionally? Does much really sink in musically? The Red Hot Chili Peppers will hold their own without Frusciante, but it is nonetheless a major loss for the band, and their next album will inevitably, I believe, be inconsistent and choppy in terms of delivery and impact because of a sharp reduction in an ear for melody above all else. Sincerely, Lisping Hibiscus

Josh Klinghoffer has confirmed that he has replaced John Frusciante as the new guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Frusciante quit the band in December.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers ended a two year hiatus in 2009 to begin work on their tenth studio album. A release is expected in late 2010.
