When Casey said there was a debut song, I figured that the dropper was probably "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty, since it had just fallen off the A/C chart (although not with the corresponding issue of the R&R A/C chart, which would have been the May 7 one). But when he said it was "Drift Away" by Uncle Kracker with Dobie Gray, I was surprised, since that song is still charting on the R&R chart it's pretty much a given that they'll still be charting on the May 21 chart. Usually, on that new chart, songs are transferred to recurrent the same week they go recurrent on the R&R chart, so we'll be saying goodbye to Matchbox Twenty in another week or two (I forget which chart was the last week for "Unwell"). However, I have a feeling that when that happens, "Drift Away" will probably return, since it's probably right outside the Top Ten. I doubt if it's gone recurrent, so you people who hate the song - brace yourself - it'll most likely be back.
Notice how most of the AT10 Archive songs are songs from the 1970s - even one from the sixties! And even the lone 1980s song, "Always Something There To Remind Me" is from the early 1980s and is a remake of a song from the 1960s. Maybe they'll do the Archive feature like that more often.
I was surprised that Casey played "Because You Loved Me" as the Celine Dion song in the Spotlight. He usually chooses less common songs (since I knew that Celine Dion was coming up, I was expecting to hear "All By Myself", "To Love You More", "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" or maybe even "Love Can Move Mountains". But instead, he played her biggest and most overplayed song.
At least we didn't have to hear "You're Still The One" or "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" as the featured song by Shania Twain and instead, a song that we don't hear everyday on A/C radio, "That Don't Impress Me Much" was played. And, instead of the tired old LDD song "I Will Remember You", the song by Sarah McLachlan that Casey played was "Angel", which I haven't heard in a darn long time. I was kind of puzzled that they played "Almost Paradise", since only half of that duo is Canadian - of course, Mike Reno of Loverboy. Don't tell me that they don't have any playable songs by Loverboy ("Heaven In Your Eyes" or "This Could Be The Night") I realize these songs aren't played on AC radio very often, but neither are a lot of the songs on the chart. Oh well, I like "Almost Paradise", so that's cool.
Last week, when Martina McBride dropped down to the edge of the chart, I was predicting she'd do something like Michael McDonald did and rebound this week. Well, she did EXACTLY what he did and moved back up to #6. Question is, will she fall back to #7 like Michael does this week? We'll have to wait and see, but she might not, since she's currently in the top 5 on the current Mediabase update (of course, due to the Uncle Kracker/Matchbox Twenty situation, that doesn't really mean much).
Apparently, Josh Groban is a big Pearl Jam fan, since Casey said that he sings songs by the group in the shower. Man, wouldn't that be something to hear "Jeremy" sung in Josh's trademark voice!
Well, that's about all for this week. We'll have to see what pans out next week. Keep your fingers crossed that a miracle will work and Uncle Kracker won't return to the chart as Matchbox Twenty exits. Because, as much as I like "Drift Away", it has served its purpose and it's time to let a new song in. It would be really nice to hear the new Lionel Richie song, since I don't believe I've heard it yet, nor have I heard Wynonna's cover of "I Want To Know What Love Is".
