After listening to the Classic AT40 1985 year end countdown a number of weeks back, I was inspired to start a year end chart. I wasn't charting in '85 so I decided on a alternate year..1981. Many years ago I had written a computer program to perform the calculations and spent a few weeks looking for it, however my better half has cleaned out the basement and that pesky old hard drive with the program has gone AWOL. So I got started late on a spreadsheet instead and hope to have the year done soon, time permitting. It would be great if we could see some others post year end '81 charts too.

One of my Top 50 songs of the entire decade of the 70's. The Raes should have had a bigger hit in America. I became familiar with Pretty Girls when Melissa Manchester released it later in the year and her version was a dance floor fave of mine. Did you chart her version as well?

Notable in this countdown is the final single from Abba. That heartbreaking news was something softened by Frida's tremendous solo album and the hope for future solo projects by all four members.
I purchased Michael Jackson's "Thriller" LP the first week it was released. It originally peaked at #3 on my LP chart on the strength of "The Girl Is Mine" single and that I also found it to be a solid album the one time I listened to it. But then I heard "Billie Jean" on the radio for the first time and it was magical. To this day I recall the street I was on when that happened. I ran home and put the album on the turntable. The second spin of that album blew me away. Just goes to show that you should never retire an album without giving it at least a couple of spins. It went from a good LP to a great LP after the second listen, and reached the #1 spot on my LP chart shortly thereafter. This week was the beginning of a 10 non-consecutive week stay on #1.

Lots of good songs and memories from your chart for that particular week. It's especially nice to see the Kim Carnes and ONJ songs doing well on your chart - those were two of my very favorites during that time - as well as Juice Newton, Flock of Seagulls... It looks like "Muscles" was a pretty big hit on your charts, based on it's longevity. So much of these songs remind me of early MTV videos....good feelings.

I also thought that Home and Dry was a very good song but it never made much of dent on the national charts. I'm certainly glad I bought the City to City LP when Baker Street came out, otherwise I may have missed out on the follow up. I also charted Melissa Manchester's version of Pretty Girls. It didn't do quite as well as Lisa Dal Bello's version, however neither version broke the top 20 for me.

I remember it had a bit of a comeback in the late 80's and it still stands up well today. Nice to see A Flock of Seagulls doing so well. I was a big fan of this song, I Ran and also Telecommunication back then. Good to see one of our local bands Saga charting for you. On The Loose was their US breakthrough. I think many of us were captivated by MJ's funky new song when it was first released, plus the memorable video that went along with it. It's my favourite Michael Jackson song.

This weeks Classic AT40 80's countdown is from Feb 16 1980. Here's mine for the week. February 16, 1980 TW LW WKS .1...10....6...Rapper's Delight - The Sugarhill Gang (1wk at #1) 22...29....2...Baby Talks Dirty - The Knack 26...37....2...Making Plans For Nigel - XTC Although I am not a rap music fan, surprisingly The Sugarhill Gang made it to the top with their catchy tune. I was indeed surprised to see the rap song at #1. I found the music to be tolerable in the early 80's, but only "Rapture" by Blondie was able to crack my chart. And that is a very loose definition of a rap song. I also have to say that few stations in my area played it. I hardly ever heard "Rapper's Delight" on radio back then. This chart date was about a month before I starting charting full-time, but I remember the interest I had in music at the time quite well. Looks like we had a common interest in the new Knack song. It pretty much tanked as the highly anticipated lead-off single to their follow-up mega-smash LP "Get The Knack". I think it may have been a bit too provocative and some thought it was a retread of "My Sharona". But I thought it rocked. Even their follow-up, "Can't Put A Price On Love", charted for me. Also interesting to see an early chart entry for XTC. About 8 years before their first single on my chart.

This was just a couple of months before I started charting, but I remember the songs quite well. Anne Murray's remake would have been a #1 for me and it looks like it is heading that way for you too. Nice to see the Alan Parson's tune performing better on your chart than the national chart. This was when I began purchasing every one of their LPs as they were being released. Also great to see the more obscure Robert John tune on your chart. Very different follow-up to "Sad Eyes". Daydream Believer did well, but didn't quite make it to to the top. Since the Monkees were my favourite childhood band, I wonder if that bias prevented it from reaching #1 :) I also loved the Monkees version (in fact the remix would reach #1 on my chart later in the decade), but I seemed unusually open to Anne's remake. I think the composition itself is incredibly solid (well done John Stewart!). I don't know if a bad version of the song can be done. Well, except a rap version. ;)

This weekend's SXM Classic 70's AT40 countdown is from Feb 17, 1979. Here's mine for the week. February 18, 1979 TW LW WKS .1....7....5...No Tell Lover - Chicago (1st of 3wks) .6....1...10...Every 1's A Winner - Hot Chocolate 21...27....3...Four Strong Winds - Neil Young 24...29....4...Baby I'm Burnin - Dolly Parton 38..---....1...Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet - Gonzalez Three weeks at #1 seems like a long time for your charts at the time, so the Chicago song must have been a major fave of yours. I was initially okay with the song, but I grew to love it as time went by. Interesting to see the Neil Young song get some chart action. It was non-existent on radio in my area in 1979. The song would have probably done much better nationally if not for being released during the height of the disco era. And speaking of disco, I was in the record store buying the 12''version (pink vinyl) of "Baby I'm Burnin" by Dolly Parton about this time. I was so into 12'' extended versions at the time. I bought the Hot Chocolate and Gonzales songs on 12'' about the same time as well.

I'm behind on charting, so I will post the week that classic AT40 celebrated a week or so ago:
February 26, 1988:
TW LW TTW .1....2....8...Father Figure - George Michael .2....3....6...When We Was Fab - George Harrison .3....1...10...Any Colour - Cutting Crew * .4....4....5...Never Can Say Goodbye - Communards .5...12....4...Coming Up You - Cars .6...13....4...Hey Mambo - Barry Manilow & Kid Creole & The Coconuts .7....8....7...Wishing Well - Terence Trent D'arby .8....9....7...Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before - Smiths .9...10....6...Without You - Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle 10....6...11...Rain In The Summertime - Alarm 11...11....8...Seeing You Again - Dan Fogelberg 12...22....3...No Conversation - A View From The Hill 13...18....6...I Get Weak - Belinda Carlisle 14...15....8...Seasons Change - Expose 15...21....4...Rock Of Life - Rick Springfield 16...17....7...Just Like Paradise - David Lee Roth 17....7...14...Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode * 18...19....5...In God's Country - U2 19...30....2...Everything's Coming Up Roses - Black 20....5...10...Could've Been - Tiffany 21...27....3...Man In The Mirror - Michael Jackson 22...23....5...Pump Up The Volume - M/A/R/R/S 23...24....4...Love Overboard - Gladys Knight & The Pips 24...28....3...When The Love Is Gone - Big Trouble 25...32....2...Talking Back To The Night - Steve Winwood 26...29....3...Twilight World - Swing Out Sister 27...33....2...Angel - Aerosmith 28...34....2...Out Of The Blue - Debbie Gibson 29..---....1...Heaven Knows - Robert Plant 30..---....1...What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong 31...31....3...Push It - Salt-N-Pepa 32..---....1...Cry Like A Baby - Bourgeois Tagg 33..---....1...Get Outta My Dreams Get Into My Car - Billy Ocean 34..---....1...Mandinka - Sinead O'Connor 35..---....1...Wait - White Lion 36...20...10...Rhythm Of Love - Yes 37...35...12...On The Turning Away - Pink Floyd * 38...36...14...Litany (Life Goes On) - Guadalcanal Diary * 39...14....8...853-5937 - Squeeze 40...40...16...New York (Hold Her Tight) - Restless Heart *
I was just saying in a prior post how I rarely charted rap music, especially in the 80's. Well, this week is an example of the exception as Salt-N-Pepa makes it to #31.
Nice coincidence that I just heard on the radio this past week that the Cars are ready to release their first new LP since I believe 1987, and their final single from that LP just happens to be at #5 on my chart this week. Let's hope the new material is as good. Of course, it will be without Orr. :'(

And coincidentally, I heard your #4 song by Expose just yesterday for the first time in ages. Just learned that the original line-up has been touring again. Great to see you would have charted the Pink Floyd tune since many Top 40 radio listeners would not have heard that one back then.

Wow...no country at all...lol Heh heh :) Yeah, I stuck with pop/top 40 up until about 2005 or so. But after that, I couldn't take it anymore. Today's country sounds a lot like late 80s/early 90s pop. That's where people my age got pushed into when top 40 pushed us out.

Rob's Top 30 -- June 30, 1990 TW LW 2W Weeks Song-Artist ** 2 weeks at #1 ** 25 21 20 19 Don't Wanna Fall In Love-Jane Child 26 00 00 01 Welcome To The Real World-Jane Child Jane Child definitely falls into the "Whatever Happened To?" category. She really disappeared after her 1990 success. I actually charted those two songs in opposite order. "Welcome To The Real World" was actually the first single from the album and it peaked on my chart at #12 at the beginning of 1990. But it went nowhere nationally. Then after "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" was a giant hit, they re-released "Welcome To The Real World" and it received more airplay.
