But, Ciara also had the issue with pushbacks (and no follow-up singles). Maybe people aren't checking for Lloyd like that, but it definitely worked for Trey.

These type of artists seem to need to reach out directly to their audience with a reality show/live chats/small arena tours/etc. and of course, label support.

No contemporary R&B singers approximate the elusive stomach-butterfly rush of infatuation as consistently as Lloyd. "Lay It Down", King of Hearts' peak moment and a lead single that predates the record by nearly a year, is an exemplar: Its innocent, almost naïve earnestness is married to a preternatural sense for R&B vocal acrobatics, giving dimension and believability to his devotion. A distinctive talent, Lloyd often let his vocals dance around the periphery of a song, giving his best tracks a spacey, removed quality. As a whole, the LP takes a major step toward streamlining his sound, pushing Lloyd's voice to the center and making a bid for a higher level of recognition in the R&B world. Despite a few missteps, it is a major success, in large part due to the chemistry of Lloyd with producer Polow Da Don.

Lloyd's knack for endearing romanticism is a vehicle for great music, and when the record falters, it feels like a misunderstanding of how his talent operates. The superfluous intro track can be forgiven thanks to its brevity and a surprisingly clunker-free verse from the Game. But "Dedication to My Ex (Miss That)", the first full song on the album, is bizarre and clumsy. The generic, faux-Motown beat frames the track as a joke, along the lines of Cee Lo's "Fuck You". Perhaps the right performance could have saved lyrics that fetishize the vagina as a relationship's vestigial remnant, but it's hard to buy the tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation of a line like "I'm about to kill this bitch!" from an artist typically so wrapped up in enthusiastic sincerity. Aside from this misstep and a platitudinous track aptly titled "World Cry", King of Hearts seems perfectly matched to fit Lloyd's strengths.

Polow clearly understands those strengths. Outside the occasional producer's flourish-- like the grinding bass break that opens Young Jeezy's verse on "Be the One"-- his work is primarily devoted to underlining Lloyd's vocals for maximum impact. On "Naked", Lloyd's performance has a dreamy distance from the physical reality of sexuality; instead, his vocals are draped in softly descending washes of guitar and muted trumpet lines, giving a sensuous texture to this awestruck ode to beauty. Single "Cupid"'s exuberant chorus baits cynical listeners: It works so well as a radio single because, through mild repetition, the hook's infectious idealism overwhelms any resistance.

The heart of the record, though, are tracks like the euphoric headrush "Jigsaw", where Lloyd's sense of rhythm lets his vocals dance confidently in the subdivisions of the groove, balancing sugary enthusiasm with deft physicality. Many of the album's best songs seem to inspire comparisons with dancing: There is a connection to the idea of dance as liberation here, as Lloyd's blushing sincerity builds up potential energy, the nimble performance acts as a release valve. In an echo of Aaliyah's "Loose Rap", album highlight "Shake It 4 Daddy" finds Lloyd dancing atop a vocal shadow; somehow, in his hands, even strip club storytelling comes across as boyish flirtation. Although the lyrics imply he's in the audience, the song's excitement suggests Lloyd is the one performing.

[AMP Exclusive] Seena Interviews Lloyd, PLUS A Surprise Performance Of “Hazel”

The station is still buzzing about our Switch Party last night with Lloyd. The crowd was hot, Llloyd was hot, and we were jazzed when he hit us with some new songs off his album. But it got even better. Not only did he surprise us with a version of the song “Hazel” off his new album, King Of Hearts, he also gave Seena the inside scoop on what its like to tour with Lil Wayne!

While everyone was excited see him perform their favorite single, Dedication To My Ex during his set, it was the super Lloyd fans who got something extra special. Lloyd sang a few tracks off his new album, King of Hearts, including a great song called “Cupid.”



Seena sat down with Lloyd and got the inside scoop about life on tour with Lil Wayne. He told her some fun stories about pranks people play on each other, and gave us a glimpse into his perspective on love. Swooooon.



Something magical happened last night. A fan from the crowd yelled out a request for the song “Hazel.” Now, lots of people shout to their favorite artist during shows in hopes that the song will be played but alas their request is never fullfilled. Last night was the exception. Lloyd started an acapella version of Hazel to appease the fan, until his drummer kicked in and off they went!



Isn’t it great when artists go on a whim and just have fun at a show!? We heart you Lloyd. Thanks for an awesome evening!

Lloyd Lays Down A Hot, Sweaty Performance At AMP’s VMA Switch Party

While the biggest names in music walked the red carpet and made their way inside Nokia Theatre for the MTV VMAs, AMP’s lucky listeners were watching it all happen live on TV right next door inside the super swanky Club Nokia VIP Room. Everyone came dressed in their hottest outfits and lounged back and cheered on their favorite artists during the awards show, all leading up to the highlight of the evening — a seductive performance by rising music sensation, Lloyd.

The crowd was pumped for AMP’s VMA after party with Lloyd, who teased the ladies with his rock hard abs and gleaming smile while he performed his big hits from his latest album King of Hearts. Lloyd definitely stole all the hearts in the crowd and soaked up all the love from his screaming fans during his hot and sweaty show at AMP’s VMA Switch Party!

As Lady Gaga was channeling her alter-ego Joe Calderone and Beyonce was flaunting her glowing baby bump, our eyes were glued to all the MTV VMA surprises and action inside AMP’s VMA viewing party. Lounging back on the couches inside the decadent Club Nokia VIP Room, AMP listeners cheered on the winners and danced to the performances before gathering for our special guest after the show.

Crowded around the stage, fans threw their hands in the air as Lloyd stormed the stage shouting “Everyone say ‘hell yeah!’” before launching into his first song. Sampling from his latest album King Of Hearts, Lloyd played his most recent hits including “Cupid” and “Lay It Down,”but nothing got the crowd going more than his uncensored rendition of his newest smash “Dedication To My Ex (Miss That).”

Kicking into his soul-throwback featuring Andre 3000, Lloyd shocked fans with his cheeky unedited version of the breakout song while shaking all the extended hands of the blushing girls in front of the stage.

Wearing an open blazer with nothing but his six-pack showing underneath, the girls were drooling over his sexy good looks, and a few lucky fans even got rub his glistening washboard abs for good luck. Lloyd was definitely showing the love to the crowd, thanking fans for coming to the intimate club show.

“There’s no rules to life or music,” Lloyd exclaimed. “I love you all and appreciate you coming out to the show.”

Working up quite a sweat from his high-energy show, Lloyd ended his short and sweet show by shaking fans’ hands surrounding the stage, barely letting him leaving the stage.

There was no better way to watch the VMAs in style than at AMP’s VMA Switch Party, and with Lloyd as the special guest, the party was going all night long!



Yes it’s true. He performed the original version, not the radio edit so we had to edit a few words. And by a few we mean a lot! Oh Lloyd, you definitely know how to have a good time!
