LLOYD TEAMS WITH 50 CENT, POLOW DA DON ON 'KING OF HEARTS'

It was a pairing that raised some eyebrows: R&B vocalist Lloyd and two-fisted rapper 50 Cent collaborating on the slinky club-banger 'Let's Get It In.' For Lloyd, a former Murder Inc. vocalist who first garnered fame with his debut album and single 'Southside,' it was indeed intriguing. After all, the relationship between 50 Cent's G-Unit crew and the Irv Gotti-led Inc. was volatile both on-and-off record the past decade. Yet Lloyd says when it came time to record the Polow Da Don-produced track there was only one artist that was on his radar.

"50 was the first person that came to mind," Lloyd explained to The BoomBox of his studio time with the bruising entertainment mogul. "He's made some great music in the past. I've always wanted to work with Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50. It's not fair for me to be put in a box. Why can't I be a fan of 50 Cent's music? I've never been a political person. Being at Interscope I can do what I want. This year is about building bridges and not burning them."

Lloyd's new found freedom has also given him the artistic license to try new vocal styles and sounds. He points to his first single 'Lay It Down' from his upcoming album 'King of Hearts' as proof of his risk taking. "I didn't know 'Lay It Down' was going to be a single," he says. "I was skeptical of the song because of the key, which was so high. The trick of the song is it's not done in falsetto. It's a high lead. I was skeptical of the yodeling as well [laughs]."

Lloyd has already found success with tracks like 'Hey Young Girl,' 'Get It Shawty,' and the Lil Wayne-assisted 'You' and 'Girls Around the World.' But his approach to recording 'Lay It Down' was what he calls a "learning experience," despite eight years in the business.

"You realize that some of your best accomplishments don't have to be your ideas," Lloyd admits. "It's about being open enough to try them. The goal was to stay out of my way and just connect with the music."

Lloyd gives much of the credit for his new focus in the recording studio to producer Polow Da Don. "Polow did the majority of the album," Lloyd said of the in-demand beat man who has helmed hits for Ciara, Fergie, Rich Boy, Keri Hilson and Chris Brown. "He's extremely generous. There's no amount of time that Polow doesn't give to the music. He spends a lot of time on the most trivial things. There have been many times I recorded a song when he wasn't around and he tells me, 'I don't believe you, man. You have to do it again.' To have somebody in the studio who is constantly pushing me and always demanding more of me vocally is great. Sometimes we just go to the studio and watch old footage of people who have done this before ... the greats like Prince and Michael Jackson and even Jodeci."

Lloyd's 'King of Hearts' is due out March 15.

LLOYD’S ‘KING OF HEARTS’ PUSHED TO APRIL

Lloyd is taking a little longer to lay his album down in stores. The R&B crooner’s latest has been delayed by a month.

King of Hearts, the fourth LP from the New Orleans-born singer, is now set to arrive on April 19, Rap-Up.com has learned. Previously scheduled for a March 22 date, the Zone 4/Interscope release will include the singles “Lay It Down” and 50 Cent-assisted “Let’s Get It In,” along with production by Polow Da Don.

A compilation of remixes to “Lay It Down” will be available at digital retailers on February 15, containing remixes from R. Kelly, Young Jeezy, Patti LaBelle, and B.o.B.

Young Goldie just wrapped his European “King of Hearts” tour and will join Trey Songz on a four-date “Love Faces” trek in the U.S. beginning February 11 in New York City.

R&B Singer Lloyd on pre-show tequila, pot and performing naked

Zap2it caught up with R&B crooner Lloyd to chat about everything from his upcoming album "King of Hearts," to leaving it all on stage (often times, including his clothes) and even his childhood ambitions. We gotta give it to the guy for honesty, and we can't imagine that seeing a live performance would be anything less than absolutely entertaining.

We're sure Lloyd wouldn't trade his current gig for the world, but growing up, he didn't always want to be a performer. As a kid, he actually wanted to be a pilot -- saying, "They got a whole plane full of girls, you know, stewardesses...I used to think pilots were pimps... that's an incorrect assumption."

While he may not be flying the planes nowadays, he certainly gets to travel his fair share.

Fresh off a European tour, the crooner hit London and Amsterdam earlier this year to drum up excitement for his latest project. He tells us he even dabbled in some of the local fare, calling Amsterdam coffee shops "The eighth wonder of the world."

"I got a little too loaded before my show," he admits of that special herb which makes the city famous. "It was interesting. I don't think I'll be doing that again."

One pre-show ritual he will continue stick by, is "Tequila, Tequila, Tequila."

"The thing I found that makes the best shows is when you're not timid, you know you're just kinda loose," he says. "I usually take a shot before I perform just to loosen up. By being loose it allows you to be at ease, and anytime that it feels effortless, that's when it's the best."

Adding that the old adage -- you know, the one about tequila and clothes -- is apparently true.

"Obviously, the least amount of clothes that can be worn possible is usually a good thing. Girls like that," the self proclaimed naturalist explains. "Anytime I can be in an environment where I don't have to wear clothes, I'm very happy."

So what's the most he's bared on stage?

"If you read about me being arrested in New York City, then you know what's up. I went balls out," he tells us.

So for all you ladies hoping to sneak a peek at the serenader, you may be in luck. Lloyd will be joining Trey Songz on their Love Faces Tour, hitting New York City, DC, Chicago and Detroit on Feb. 11-15. No word on whether Trey also intends to strip down for the shows, though.

While Lloyd had hopes of debuting his latest album on Valentine's day, the release date has been pushed back; But he'll still have a romantic little treat for his fans on that special day.

"I'm releasing a song in the middle of the tour called 'Cupid,'" he spills. "Which should come out for Valentine's day."

As for his album being pushed back, Lloyd wants to reassure his fans that all's well in the recording process.

"I think we just felt like we could give it a little more time, shoot some more videos, release some more music and just keep the fans engaged until we figure it out," he tells us. "Obviously we want people to know there's no problems, we're very happy with the music that we've made... It's just been pushed back due to a prolonged recording process. Just time, which is something we can afford at this point. So that's a good thing."

In the aftermath of a successful 'Love Faces Tour' with Trey Songz, which rocked New York, DC, Detroit and Chicago over Valentine's Weekend, love is still in the air as Lloyd drops his new single "Cupid", a classic melodic love song that's still bass heavy enough rattle your trunk. "Cupid", a follow up to Lloyd's hit single "Lay It Down", is the official second single from the forthcoming album 'King of Hearts' due out this spring!!

Interscope is serious about pushing "Lay It Down" to Top 40/Mainstream radio. Lloyd was on the entire hour for "JoJo's Top 9@9" segment on KIIS FM (Los Angeles). That is a major primetime slot.

Lloyd didn't even mention his single, "Cupid." I guess Interscope wanted him to keep the focus on "Lay It Down." Lloyd kept referring to "Lay It Down" as his new single.
