MTV recently caught up with femcee Nicki Minaj on the set of her music video “Your Love”. You can’t see much from the interview, but it looks like part of the video is going to have a sexy geisha theme. In case you haven’t heard yet, “Your Love” recently topped the Billboard rap charts, making Nicki the first female to do so unaccompanied since Missy Elliott back in 2002 with “Work It”. “I was not planning on putting the song out at all,” she told MTV News over the weekend on the “Your Love” video set. “But then I heard it one day, somebody told me it was online. And I was like, ‘No way, no way in the world that song is out.’ I went and listened to it and was really upset. It wasn’t mixed, it wasn’t finished, it wasn’t anything — I wasn’t gonna use it at all. But then radio started playing it.” www.mtv.com/news/articles/1643155/20100707/minaj__nicki.jhtml

^Exactly. Most of her tracks I thinks she all over Nicki's cl*t. I like her punchlines tho.

I guess they're trying to capitalize on Thanksgiving sales. Smart move even though I think the release date is too far off.

No it gives them time to ride this song out for the rest of July and release her next single produced by Swizz Beatz in mid August and ride that hit all the way until Mid October when she releases her "3rd" single in the beginning of November...this is how it works now, release 3-4 songs before the album drops (Drake & Usher)

This strategy could easily backfire since Massive Attack flopped and there is no guarantee she'll have another hit. Two singles is cool but when you go beyond that you are taking a huge risk if the 'third' single flops.

I believe the more singles released prior to the album, the less chance the album has at being successful. And, in Nicki's case, the label-promoted single is the record that flopped while the throwaway record is what radio embraced. In her position, they need to strike while the iron's hot. Either way, I don't see her album having Drake-sized success but they could still get quite a bit of mileage from it if they play the cards right.

Damn November is so far away...I don't understand the need for all the singles. After "Your Love" is done they should put out another single and a few weeks later drop the album. Mid-October would be better.

That is far to long, and they're taking a huge risk doing that, whose to say that a 3rd or 4th single would be a success. Usher did not release that many singles before he released his album. Papers was just a promo single. I don't understand the hold up. It's been long enough. I say she should release it far sooner than that. It' still possible that she will be the first female rapper to strike platinum in quite a while. I'd say she'll do somewhere along the lines of 225 to 250k, no less than 200k tho.

Don't rapstars usually open with big numbers? I'd say at least 250k. I'm not sure about rap artist debuts with the music industry in the condition it's in currently so I won't go higher though I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

No it gives them time to ride this song out for the rest of July and release her next single produced by Swizz Beatz in mid August and ride that hit all the way until Mid October when she releases her "3rd" single in the beginning of November...this is how it works now, release 3-4 songs before the album drops (Drake & Usher) Massive attack=massive flop <<your love=unexpected summer hit. This would actually ride out until August. It has about a month left in it and they should released the next single to radio late August/early September and then the video late September...then release the "third single" late November/early December just for promo/sale purposes. Drake only released 2 singles and Ushers label was craving for a POP hit for an established artist. This strategy could easily backfire since Massive Attack flopped and there is no guarantee she'll have another hit. >>true...however, I have a feeling that they are going to release the right singles. Nicki was the one that pushed for Massive attack. I think she has learned her lesson and even between Lil wayne and YM they released all the right single with them. Her chances are high Two singles is cool but when you go beyond that you are taking a huge risk if the 'third' single flops. >>I agree...except when you are talking about 4th quarter sales. Your love is going to peak on urban by August and start to gain traction on pop by august...they will probably release songs to urban first and then release to crossover right before urban peaks to make it have more longevity. If they release the third record late late November/December to radio at least that can help boost sales during this time and then put out a video during January where albums are slow she can keep her position high with a new record. Kind of like what "toxic" did for Britney years back (it help christmas sales to be released in December and helped keep it higher on the charts during January when the actual video was released. I agree 100%. I believe the more singles released prior to the album, the less chance the album has at being successful. And, in Nicki's case, the label-promoted single is the record that flopped while the throwaway record is what radio embraced. In her position, they need to strike while the iron's hot. I see it like this: Spring single "promo" Massive attack Summer: Your love late summer/fall: new single late fall/winter: third official sinlge. spring: fourth official single summer: fifth official single Platinum plus album. Either way, I don't see her album having Drake-sized success but they could still get quite a bit of mileage from it if they play the cards right. >>with sales quite high in November I could see it doing north of 250k if they promote the heck out of it. I think they are going to push for 2x platinum when it is all said and done. I see platinum within reach. Damn November is so far away...I don't understand the need for all the singles. After "Your Love" is done they should put out another single and a few weeks later drop the album. Mid-October would be better. >>If she just put out a video in August I doubt they would have a video ready earlier than Oct/Nov. I think they will releae it to radio and then shoot the video a few weeks laterand release it right intime for promo during late Nov. Dec. (if they were smart they would do that) That is far to long, and they're taking a huge risk doing that, whose to say that a 3rd or 4th single would be a success. Usher did not release that many singles before he released his album. Papers was just a promo single. I don't understand the hold up. It's been long enough. I'd say she'll do somewhere along the lines of 225 to 250k, no less than 200k tho. <<I think they are going to make sure she makes a mark with this album. With swizz beatz on hand...I am confident that the third single they release will be a radio hit. they wont put out an accidental smash...it will be a planned smash. They know how much is riding on the next single to be a hit and I think it will do great. My thing is that they can't release a record just off of Your love, they need another smash to really sell the album. My thing is I would like to see her debut at #1 but she is releasing in a competitive time. Not sure if #1 debut is in line...hopefully top 5.

Also elementd5 - Drake had 3 singles: "Over - March 4" "Find You Love - May 5" & "Miss Me - June 1" and the album dropped June 15, 2010! And yes those are official dates. So as I said she will be fine if not better!!!

Eve and Lauryn are the ones I can think of right now. Also, I think that with your love ready to peak in the next month and on the rise on pop that she will need a new single my early to mid october to serve as adequate promo for her 11/23 album release. I guess Massive flop attack will serve as a buzz single and your love will serve as a surprise hit. Her next single will be a smash for sure. I just hope she can put out a song that is a rhythmic, urban, and pop smash. It would be cool for her to score a #1 hit...very few females have done that on their own as well....

They simply are not comparable, at all. Plus, Swizz Beats hasn't produced more than 5 or so major hits this past decade, amongst a slew of flops. He isn't exactly a "go to hit maker." I luv Nicki and I look forward to her album. I'm just saying that this strategy is very risky and I hope it works out for her.
