Rather than take up the thread on a single, I think a thread could be made for this.
Red Hot Chili Peppers did in 1999.
Weezer did it in 2001 (and kinda 2005)
Green Day did it in 2004.
What band will be the next to have a huge comeback on Alternative, Mainstream Rock, or just in general?

Those you mentioned were not much in coming back. Those bands were never critically out. I'd list Alice In Chains instead. Maybe Train and Pearl Jam up there also. I'd say Smashing Pumpkins are due for the next big Modern comeback.

I think Smashing Pumpkins could pull it off. If they had sent "Doomsday Clock" to radio, I think that would have hit #1 on Alternative.

I think Switchfoot might be doing it right now... Good observation. Their lead single is still climbing, and their album is very aggressive from what I've heard. I don't know if they could make a comeback in pop like they had, because I think they could carve out a niche in Alternative. I kinda thought the Black Crowes were able to, but I guess not. Their latest album is excellent. |

Modern rock artists who have made "comebacks" (by my admittedly somewhat ambiguous definition):
Nine Inch Nails (2005 with With Teeth....writers block, previous album's singles not dominating...)
Weezer (2001 with The Green Album...)
Alice In Chains (2009 with Black Gives Way...)
Jane's Addiction (2003 with Strays)
Green Day (2004....although they never truly went away, they re-catapulted to mainstream status with American Idiot)
Beck (2005....this is probably stretching a bit)
Tool (2001...they never experienced this chart dominance, though...especially with "Schism"...2006, IMO, wouldn't count because of their prominence in the Lateralus era)
Offspring (2008....they had been fading into obscurity and this year marked an epic comeback for the group)
I don't think bands who simply wait 3-5 years to release material can be counted unless they were clearly on the decline (like Green Day or Nine Inch Nails) and then catapulted again to extreme success.
I think groundbreaking or influential bands will likely achieve more success than bands like, say, STP or to an even greater extent Everclear, Bush, et al. Bands like the Goo Goo Dolls or Counting Crows who have clearly changed styles to accompany different formats will never return. Blink-182 could easily come back and score prominence with a couple #1s or near #1s. I could see a band like 311 scoring a mega-hit and mega-mainstream hit that has really been lacking over their last 10 years, with the possible exception of "Love Song."

If I had a vote and it might come true I'd hope for a Bush or Soundgarden mega album. Reality says that I'd have to agree with pen and say the next big shot should be STP and that is one I'm anticipating like Christmas

Radiohead seems like it should be a possibility based on how many people are obsessed with them. They just don't tend to release things that radio can latch on to. I feel that if the Mars Volta ever put out anything radio friendly, they would be able to notch another decent hit.

I think for anything to be considered a 'comeback', at least one of the following two must occur:
• The release itself has to be somewhat unexpected. (eg. Alice In Chains, 2009)
• The magnitude of its success must come as a surprise (eg. Green Day, 2004)
No explanation needed for Alice In Chains.
Green Day qualifies because they were on top of the world. Nobody saw that coming.
Tool wouldn't qualify because they typically take about five years to release all their records.
Gorillaz with "Feel Good Inc." is one of the biggest comebacks of the decade due to the imminence of one-hit-wonder status after "Clint Eastwood". Similar to Beck with "Where It's At" in the 90's. Not sure if a future hit would be much of a surprise now, though.
I wouldn't consider bands just exercising the natural cycle of album releases (Radiohead, MCR, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam).
Blink-182 and STP are easy picks. Wouldn't surprise anyone if they become huge; it's just a matter of when they come.
