subo effect is going to disappear next week. Lets just say she is near retirement next week. Maybe she can hire herself a husband or a bf now.

^Wouldn't be so sure about that- if that were the case, she would be losing the #1 spot in the post-Christmas week, which, apparently, is not happening. Seriously, some people's attitude/bitterness in regards to her success is kinda baffling, considering how some of their favorites are not necessarily musical wonders themselves.

I don't find too many are questioning her singing talent or doubting it either. But what does being a musical wonder have to do with attitudes or bitterness. In a world where there are so many elements to being the music star package to just be a good singer and sell so successfully on what apears to be pure novelty/gimmick it might cheapen peoples attitude towards her. I think many people that were happy for her in November or even on that show she was on might think it is too much and are over it. We will see in a few years if it is novelty or not. Either way, when you have some of the top sellers adding other elements to the package (could be looks, image, voice, songwriting, producing, playing an instrument, stage presence, personality, charm, edge...the list goes on) it excites people to know that these elements are producing success. IMO

I don't think Susan is a gimmick. She's selling too well, here it is January and she's still over six figures, granted she's far lower but I can only imagine how pathetic the rest of the top 10 is going to look if Susan is selling 160K when she's the hottest seller right now. LOL, I pity them.
I am happy that it looks like she might not beat Taylor's overall sales, Taylor deserves her #1 slot, she's worked hard all year for it and hopefully it'll also help her win AOTY, I think every little bit helps.
The only way you could fairly say Susan was a gimmick or a "Christmas Novelty" would have been if she had plunged out of the top 10 or even top 50 right after Christmas. Because she is still #1 (and with Six figures) she's proven she's a hot artist, she doesn't need another album to prove that to me, these sales are more then enough. She'll do a repeat with her second album.

Does anyone know what is the longest an album that did not debut at #1 and then hit #1 in the future? Gaga could break a record

Gaga could break a record The only one that comes to mind is Live's Throwing Copper; it managed to reach #1 in its 52nd week, in 1995. There likely are other albums who took longer, I suppose. EDIT: see post below.

The Soundscan record is for the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack - it took 63 weeks to climb to #1. If she waits a couple weeks to do it, Gaga would break the record. This will be week 62.

slw- there have been comments slagging Boyle's album, how they can't believe it's selling what it is, whatever. Yeah, she came from a British talent competition, and perhaps her album isn't much better than some of the debut albums from, say, the likes of American Idol- but this goes beyond that- this is a worldwide sensation, whether it's just of the moment or not. I don't know why anyone would root for the album to plummet. Maybe it's because I don't do that for acts I don't care all that much for, I dunno.

Did anyone think she was going to continue selling 500k+ into January? It's a drastic drop but the numbers are conditional for what usually happens during this time of year. Even with the 150-165k, she's still whooping everybody else's ass. Imagine what everybody else will be selling. lol

Does it really matter if SuBo falls off next week? I mean, she sold 3 million in a months time. Mainstream artists these days can't even do that within a two years time. LOL She and her label already cashed in. I doubt it matters now.

I am curious to see if Subo hangs around for awhile. I mean, I know her sales are completely amazing already and she isn't going to drop out of the top 200 by February, but I wonder if she will have an AC hit at any point or keep momentum going enough to stick around the top 30 for awhile.

Some albums do not need singles to stay afloat

I know-I have watched the charts for awhile. But, I don't have a magic ball that is telling me if SuBo will be one that will still be top 50 in January 2011 or not.

My guess is no. This is an album built on enormous hype, stemming from a talent show. This is the first of its kind (for this show).
The hype though will enventually die down, especially when Britain's Got Talent, comes around again for another run.

changing subjects, but i really do think Ke$ha's album will do like 80k because it's been in the top 20 of itunes albums for a while now, and now it's like #5. 2m, is there any amazon pre-order info like there was for Boyle?

Info was only given out on Susan Boyle becuase I Dreamed a Dream was the most pre-ordered album ever from amazon. Animal is #57 on the amazon.com chart.

Susan will likely be on American Idol too. I'm not sure where she'll be on the charts by next year this time but I think she'll be reaching diamond with this effort.
I think that's only going to help. When it rolls around again, they will likely start covering her all over again showing her audition tape from last year over and over again. The most popular acts from these reality shows always benefit from a new season because they hype them up and promote them. It'll only help her as idol helps its tops acts when a new season comes, whether it be featuring them on the show, highlighting their success or running commercials for their cd's during the show. It'll help her when it rolls back around helping her to sustain her sales. that's why you always see these idol contestants going back on the show, it helps them....some go on multiple times per season.

Maybe, Maybe not
But for this album to still be hanging around 12 months from now, something else will need to fan the flames, as it were of a hype-driven record.

I am not sure what Kesha will do. I don't think she will bust out with huge numbers just tracking history of similar artists. I think her real album sales will come from longevity from getting steady hits. I want to say more like 50-70K?

Oh, well yeah I don't see why people are hoping for it too fall of the charts but I think that those comments you are referring might come from the reasons I stated above. People tend to have more respect for someone like Taylor who has been working her behind off to earn that #1 album of the year or Alicia Keys and Mary J who got blocked from a #1 album. IDK. I just think when you have artist that have more elements to their success people root for them more as opposed to what many believe to be hype/gimmick/luck. I doubt anyone's doubting her talent as a songstress, though.

The sales week this covers still has some holiday juice, schools out and the work week was null or shortened. Radio countdowns + Post x-mas clearance sales + gift card redemptions in the mix, etc.
The week after this, almost everyone is taking another 30 %. The week after this is the one where retail returns to normal and the chart numbers we see stay relatively stable for about a month after that.
I can see Sue melting 40 %'ish, she's flying so high that her declines are going to be uglier than most for a little while. If Ke$ha can do 80 k'ish, she's probably in the running for #1.

Kesha may do more than 100,000. The buzz off her first single must be HUGE.

Ke$ha is on the same level as many other mega digital sellers of this era. I doubt her album does anything major first week, especially in January. I won't say much about the longevity, however. A few artists have shocked me there. I do think she is one of those artists who are only good for a few digital hits, nothing more nothing less...

Over 100K would be a complete smash hit for a January release that is fairly quiet and for a new artist nowadays. Other similar artists took forever to mount really successful eras (including Lady Gaga and Katy Perry-Katy debuted with like...50K with a #1 hit at the time).

I know I am probably going to get a ton of negative posts for saying this but if you consider being "#1" as being the best selling or most popular album of the week then the time from its debut to the rise of the Michael Jackson hits set to the top of the charts was 6 years
